So, I just picked up CoH, and i'm finding that while i'm not terrible at the game, there's one thing that stands out the most to me...

I can push myself all the way to a guys base, using nothing but a few inf units, a few jeeps/motorcycles, and tactics, but as soon as the bastards whip out tanks, it doesn't matter HOW much of a beating i'm putting on their base, the tanks will come in a swarm and rape me...

WTF AM I DOING WRONG? This is totally killing the game for me. On 2 or 3 occasions already, i've managed to be INSIDE of the bastards base, dropping arty and distracting his defensive MG bunkers, but then last minute, just before I start putting the beating on him, he'll pull a swarm of tanks out of his ass, rush the **** out of my base, and it's game over for me.

Anybody want to play a few rounds with a noob or sommat?

:(

Are you talking about multiplayer? and which side are you playing? that matters cause tactics change.

Axis has great anti-tank infantry, if you're playing allied use the 3 man anti-tank guns and rangers.

first off, are you using allies or axis?
secondly, i suggest playing single player to familiarize yourself with the game a bit better
thirdly, it is quite difficult to win a lengthy game without any kind of armor support.... you need to find a balance between infantry and armor and you'll do just fine
also, most of the artillery, aside from howitzers of course, are relatively weak against buildings so dont bother
most tanks are great for destroying buildings, so are AT guns and infantry with rocket launchers/satchels etc
aside from that, dont stress out too much, after all, you did JUST buy the game.... ive played nearly 200 games and im still learning new things and constantly developing my strategy

btw my CoH name is
CorradO

which team are you using.

allied is what i'm most familiar with. you can go riflemen w/ sticky bombs, recoilless rifles and airborne, or, my favorite, the airdropped at guns.

Sinko, you're on my xfire list right? If so, let's play over my break, I'm also sort of noob-ish at the game, and it'll be nice to 1v1 with someone who sucks as much as me :D

I'm talking for both.

I'm playing a bit more SP, and i'm starting to notice that once tanks get called into the game, even if I have tanks, I suck...

TBH though, i've never gotten to tanks with Axis just yet :(

If you're allies, just use the wonderful all-purpose sniper-accurate 500-mile range US M1 57mm AT gun. Lots of them.

lol... bitter are we?
you'd have no chance cause ive got snipers taking them out one by one while my volks flank you

they way I do it....just bring a few tank killers yourself. And use arty to get the tanks off your back in a pinch.....

It's all about tecking up faster than he does (and more than that, just being prepared for armor - a few riflemans squads with stickies is NOT enough :P). If you've got the advantage early game then this is alot easier as you'll be bringing in resources faster than them. Essentially you need to get all your buildings (that you want to use) up as soon as you can, while getting a good balance of units from each rolling out while you're waiting for more manpower/fuel. Example - as allies, starting with WSC/Barracks, I usually build maybe 2 rifleman squads or 2 MGs, then maybe a third of each or a jeep/sniper before going straight to a Supply Yard as soon as I hit 50 fuel. Then it's either a Motor Pool pretty much straight away or saving for a Tank Depot (rarely would you want to skip Motor Pool if you want to survive against axis armor though... unless you're airborne and can drop ATs).

Anyway, point being you need to have some anti-amor on the field fairly early on. Generally as allies they're gonna be rolling out Stugs before you even get to the Tank Depot, so unless you think you can beat him to the punch you want to have a couple AT guns and some anti-tank infantry (rifleman w/ stickies, airborne with recoiless, or rangers - my personal preference ^^). But realise that even after you're rolling out Shermans, even with the gun upgrade they're not much of a match against anything above maybe a Panzer. Knowing how to micro with shermans can help, but don't rely on it against a decent axis player, or if you're up against more than just the one tank really. SO, rather than going for armor superiority, keep pushing that mix of units. Tanks + AT guns (watch for cross-fire :x) + anti-tank capable infantry and whatever else you can throw at them. ESPECIALLY important if/when they start rolling out Tigers. More likely than not, he's gonna be relying on that Tiger to lead his comeback from a crappy early game, so you really need to reroute ALL of your forces, take it down as quickly as possible, then launch everything you have at him before he has the time/manpower to roll out anything else (not always guaranteed to work, btw ^_^).

As Axis, I find as long as you're rolling out SOME form or armor, all you really need to focus on is having a good balance of infantry to back it up. If you rely solely on your armor, you will most likely fail (unless the opposition is completely unprepared). I'm not really that experienced with axis yet, but I usually try and have a stug or two out early, and equip my grenadiers/stormtroopers with rockets soon as I can.

ANYWAY (this is turning into a lecture), the point is to be prepared. Don't fret over it too much as this is every newbie players downfall. Keep at it and you'll get used to it.

Oh, and if you're in his base early like you said, have a good look at what he's building so you know what to be prepared for. And more than that, try destroy his tank yard or whatever is causing you trouble if you can :P

Oh yeah, small tip I picked up as allies - if you roll out an early armored car and get it into their base, chuck a mine down infront of his sturm armory. The moment he gets a stug out it'll detonate, damaging the engine. He'll need to repair it before he takes it onto the battlefield, or risk having it easily defeated. Either way it could slow him down just enough for you to set up a nice welcoming party and/or counter-offensive :)

Err, hope this helped. Thanks mum. Love to my peoples.

well done bad hat
PM me if you wanna play some time

Hang on, City of Heroes whaaa?

EnnuiDeckard

i havent had time to play COH in weeks but im on break now ;)

Ok, so I usually never get to play as US, because people allways whore Allies online (pop into any game and you'll see that the Allied slots are the ones that fill up the fastest).

So, i've been getting used to playing as Axis lately, but I lose. Allot.

Today I finally got to play a game as US, and using all the tactics and shit Dreadlord and experience have taught me for playing on Axis, my team pwnd.

WTF...

hopefully ill have a chance to master both sides before they add more factions
i would absolutely love to see the russians and japanese enter the fray!
