did i miss anything, has valve ever elaborated on the relationship between the Combine and the Xen...

- Did the Combine and Xen know of each other before the events of Half Life 1/the resonance cascade/ black mesa incient

- Was the Combine in control of the Xen during the black mesa incident

What we saw in hl1 was the very end of a long struggle between the combine and the last of the nihilanth's race...although it's a bit different than the word "prompted" implies. The nihilanth's "world" (if it could be said to have) was long since in the past as far as the nihilanth was concerned; xen was their final retreat, and they had their back to the wall, as it were, when the fissure appeared that let them spill into our dimension. Xen itself is sort of a dimensional transit bottleneck--an area of continual contention.

From an email from Marc Laidlaw, Half-Life's head writer. The Xenians were a race persecuted and hounded by the Combine. Xen was where they retreated to. Nothing is native to Xen. It's a bottleneck for interdimentional travel and every species that lives there somehow got there via teleporting into it and getting stuck.

That's incorrect . Combine is a third party. There is nihilanths race(race x?), Vortigaunts , and Combine.

-xen creatures were enslaved by nihilanth(s) who were fighting with combine at some point
-Xen Earth portals open (g-mans doing)
-Nihilanth(s) then were killed by Gordy
-Combine then came to Xen and Earth and were able to fully take over both(Nihilnath being dead)
I'd expect that we will never see combine planet if there is such a thing. ep.3 concept art probably is showing combine buildings in xen as its the border world and thats where the portals on earth go to. It was a Super Portal to Xen in ep. 2


I was wondering whats the point of g-man giving the crystal to black mesa, it was unforseen consequences apparently but consequences for what?

Race-X and the Nihilanths have no ties to each other. I think you may be confusing Race-X for the Controllers.

Also, the Combine never reached Xen.
