commanda nd conquer 3 / ea account question

I am aware that in order to play online with cnc 3 it is necessary to create an EA account. But does EA operate like valve where the CD key is only tied to one account.

I'd like to know as I found a copy of cnc 3 quite cheap but it is used and so i'm not sure if i can play online or not.

i believe you have to use the account that it was registered to.
