Anyone else having fun with this?
I started off tryiung it out on SP, then last night I went 2-3 rounds on a random server and had a blast. I didn;t think the micro-managing would be that great, but it's fun as hell. Sending out orders, calling in UAVs, artillery, and supplies, and recieving sitreps from squad leaders is amazing. I was especially surprised how well it worked on a random server with no clan affiliations or anything. The squad leaders listened to me for the most part and got the job done in fine style. I'm really glad they added this feature for BF2, really expands on teamplay.

I've not been tempted to try commander mode, too much of a responsibility, and I'm not much of a strategy guy :-).

Although, I hate it when all three beach CPs are taken by the enemy, and my commander/squadleader expects us to retake the middle one, being crushed from three directions.

try it for a round, you just might enjoy it, and though there is some responsibility to it, it's not like playing some in-depth wargame, it's still fast-paced
and it lets you decide who you want to attack what and when

Commander mode is fun when there's squads on the server that actually work together and follow orders somewhat. It's just frustrating facing a team that is organized when yours isn't.

I also hate it when my team has a crappy commander. You know it's no good when they ask how to get into the commander screen. I can't stand when commanders insist on running around and fighting. It doesn't get them points, they should just stay in commander mode all the time to actually use their assets.

Only time I tried it, it was boring as hell as the only squad who took commands where HL2.NET, the rest just pissed around, never stayed together etc. Playing commander is only any good if the squads play well...

as Amish and Ritz said, when there is no one following your commands... it's futile even trying.

on the other hand when you have effective squads, it can be a very rewarding experience, lotta fun.
same goes for when you are a squad leader and you have a good commander

yesterday I was leading my squad of Hl2.netters, and our commander (had a weird name like ycia or something... I forget) but he was really good... he organized the squads he could, spoke to me directly on voip telling me where he needed me, we worked together to coordinate attacks, supplies and arty raids..

not only that he regularly told me the location of enemies hiding near the flags, he saved my ass at least 6 times by saying "Redundant enemy incoming on your right from the crane" sure enough there's a guy there trying to place c4 on my tank... BLAM! "thanks comm"

really the next level of gameplay when it works

I want to get on the server that you've all been playing on, nearly all the servers are just people messing around, its annoying.

i've played as commander before and i was doing alright but i find if i choose to be commander, i dedicate myself completley to it and don't play actual in game

I agree, if no one's gonna listen then why have a commander at all except for artillery support
i really should join the HL2.net guys on BF2, i feel like i've been missing out

^ Yeah I've got the same question. I'm a commander, and I know to hold down T to give artillery strikes and UAV and so forth, but they only do it at my position. Can't I give that order on the other side of the map?

**points to Caps-lock**

That should make commanding a bit easier

indeed it does, i like to find a nice, quiet place to hide on the carrier and just hit capslock... which is cruise control for cool in BF2

the best bit is the scroll wheel (for me at least) when in the commander screen. You can zoom in to watch from bird's eye REALTIME all the action. It's good if you scan an area and pick up something, but want to see exactly where they are.
HAHA i was having sniper wars with my flatmate (extremely fun with this map actually) but got a bit bored, so applied for commander and found him with the zoom function, and rained hell upon him with arty.
