Hi guys, not sure where to post this so I just posted it here.

What do you guys think about competitive gaming with regards to the lifespan of a game? Is it necessary for competition to prolong a game's lifespan? Or is fun enough?

Competition does wonders to prolong the life of a game. Some games are designed for this in mind. I.E. unreal tournament, CS etc.

Look at single player games, have any of them dominated and controlled as many hours as multiplayer games? Not recently since multiplayer has become so easy. Competition makes the game fun and competetive gaming is the top tier of that which many players strive to become.

My opinion matches Glirks, like usual. If there is no multiplayer, then the game will drop...if there is only multiplayer the game will flourish. Look at Quake 3 Arena. It's still be played today by alot of gamers. Competetiveness makes a game last so much longer.

I think that multiplayer and single player games are completely different animals and shouldn't be compared.
I love Deus Ex. I love KoToR.
But I also love Quake III Arena (I played that competitively for over 6 years) and Company of Heroes. I also fully support the pro-gaming revolution - but that doesn't mean I don't like SP.

Deus Ex and KoToR were great, but once you beat em they kinda go into the bin to never been seen until some rainy day rolls around, multiplayer games have staying power (if done right)

I've never personally got involved in things hugely competitive. I've tried it out, playing clan wars versus other plans (oh very serious), but I get more enjoyment playing a game laid back, doing as I like, having maximum fun (not at the cost of other people), with no restraints. Competition feels like that to me, so I just play for the fun of it mainly, with people I know. That makes a game truly enjoyable in my eyes.

That's true. Some people only stay with certain games through the competition though. That's where alot of people find their fun, in striving to get to a certain skill level, and testing it on other people, and fixing your mistakes. I always loved those aspects of games.

I must say having been in a BF2 Clan for well over a year now that Competitive Gaming is one of the best things ever...yet it can also be very taxing and wearing emotionally and physically D:

As such i don't play much anymore

It's the mental distress from having to play such a substandard game for so long. Play Quake IV post-1.3 instead, and your troubles will be solved. :P

I try, but damnit, every time I try to join a server, I have to download 200 megabytes of something at 12kbps, or 900 meg at 200kbps the at 800 meg it cancels. GAR! Half tempted to try out 2142 again.

Wow, thanks for the responses guys. I think in any online multiplayer game like a FPS, people will always want to be better skilled thus generating interest in the game. I am wondering if there are any communities which mostly focus on fun and are doing well and maintaining interest in a game?

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't comparing single player and multiplayer in the sense that multi > single. I was comparing them in the sense that multiplayer tends to make a game last longer than the single player aspect of a game.

Competetive gaming makes games fun for those who don't compete in it. It adds another skill level for casual gamers to climb towards. without that tier of players most servers would be full of nubs.

If your like me who plays to win you want people better than you on the server. This helps your skill increase a lot faster. Not only that but clans have a lot more to offer than just skill. A lot of servers out there are dedicated to a certain clan. They exponentially increase the community outside of the game as well.

I loved playing clan matches in the Electronics Sport Leauge, that was awesome.

I like the idea of competitive gaming. But for f*cks sake, they are not "athletes" and please, please get them off the tv. If I was looking for a show with obnoxious kids I'd watch MTV. And if I wanted to fall asleep watching it, I'd turn on Nascar. :D
