Compressing AVI files?

Does anyone know how to compress AVI files for free?

Im putting together some video of me and my mates snowboarding and it occured to me that I better check what size the thing will end up..... at only half way through with 5mins of footage its 1GB.............

Ideas anyone?

thats ****ing massive if it's a gig after only 5 mins :\ in terms of compressing...usually you can break it down into smaller peices but damn, someone will have a suggestion eventually..

Sounds like its pretty much a totally uncompressed AVI file. I know the basics, but I'm sure someone else here can instruct you how to do it better than me (and for free).

I'm far from being an expert but it seems like you've probably saved your video as "full frames uncompressed".

What program are you using to get the source video to your PC?

Most movie editing apps will allow the use of Codecs to compress video files. You usually select the codec you want (or no codec i.e. full frames uncompressed) when you choose which format to save the video in.

If you haven't already, i would suggest downloading and using the DivX or Xvid codecs for maximum compression with least loss of quality.

I know Divx can give you some guff about it being liscensed or not. There are methods for getting around this (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more), but you could probably just use a decent free one (Xvid is if I'm not wrong?).

Xvid is free and actually gives better compression than DivX, but yes there are....ahem ways of getting around the licensing thing....but why bother, just go with Xvid.

xvid is the nicest compression out there other than bink/radtools

Bink goes for playspeed over compression tho', so you won't want to be using that.

Hum.... gawd, Xvid keeps crashing on me. It just comes up with a frame with "XVid Progress" or something like that and its just blank....

It then just locks up

Ideas?
