I built a new computer a few weeks ago, and I had my first computer freeze today. I had to turn off the power. Since it froze, I didn't get a report of the problem in my event viewer.

The mouse cursor was also frozen, which to me says that it might have been a hardware error, but I'm not sure.

It's not something I want to learn to live with, so I hope that it was just a freak error. But it would be helpful for understanding or troubleshooting if I could safely say whether it was hardware or software problem.

It seems to me that the mouse cursor is always still active when Windows stops responding (unless of course you get a BSOD or something)

But also, any known causes for this kind of thing?

This happened to me in Windows 7, and i formated and everything was fine after that. This happened on another computer of mine and that was caused by faulty RAM.

I've had video issues (freezes?) where the PC may have been responsive but I just couldn't see it to find out. hehe
Don't recall exactly what was wrong though.

download Ultimate Boot CD or Hirens and run a GoldMemory test

then if it passes at least 3-5 times you could call it safe BUT i've still seem RAM that passed fine but either kept a system from booting or would continue to give it trouble. Some mobo's just don't like certain RAM.
