computer guru's! halflife 2 crashing, i need your help.

First off im new at all this computer stuff so bare with me. i installed HL2 and have been playing it fine but pretty much everytime i play it it freezes or crashes after playing for awhile, giving an error message saying " hl2 .exe, application error, blah blah... memory could not be read" ???? what could be causeing this?
BTW my system should play this game i have that new 64bit AMD Athlon 2800 cpu, 1 gig of ddr ram, 250gig HD, and BFG 550xp 256mb video card.
Any ideas??
if i try re installing the game will i loose my current saved spot?

ur gonna have to reinstall thats a commen error sadly or validate you steam files but I dont know how that works

Just back up the save games folder.

And validating is the last thing I could think you could do.

But I mean, cmon, how hard is it to just uninstall then reinstall a game?

But then again, for me, that means reoptimizing my registry, cleaning out my windows folder, doing a disc error check, defragging, then rerunning bootvis.

The crashes will happen and cannot be stopped as far as I know.

Are your RAM inserted correctly, have no dust on them?


Also, I think you can get a file for memory tests, but I can't find the link.

I remember installing Half Life 2 for the first time - EWW! The servers were super overloaded and I was opting not to install CounterStrike, which corrupted the installation. It took a few installs before I figured out that I had to include it for it to work, so I spent the better part of a day installing it. Do a search - that was a very common error when this game first came out and I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't seen that error since the second or third update.
