I've just buggered up windows. While trying to weed out a problem with BootVis I've stopped being able to boot - it gets to just before the welcome screen ('Windows XP') and stops there, with no HD activity, until I get frustrated and switch it off again. The likely cause is me ****ing with registry settings. Is there any way to 'system restore' outside of XP? Any other suggestions other than the last resort of reinstalling the OS?

-I've backed up my registry before I've made any changes, but like an idiot I've forgotted where I kept the files, and I'm going to have a hard time finding them under DOS

Have you tried "startup with last good configuration"? It's one of the F-something keys when you're booting, maybe the same one as safe mode (I just hammer all of them, but I think it's F8).
