Computer restarting when on loading screen

ok i installed the game today and started it up and it ran smoothly up to the loading screen then my computer restarts and a message comes up saying "windows has just recovered from a serious error" any way to fix this?

im get error Messages:
failed to lock vertex buffer CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer
and
This instruction at "0x77279afb" referenced memory at "0x7dc48950". The memory could not be "read"

Terminate Program...

This happens when it is at the loading screen. I have reformated this computer multiple times, downloaed the newest drivers for my graphics card and downloaded the newest version of direct X

System Specs:
CPU: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT
Ram: 1 Gig
Hard Drive: 320 Gig
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

I would be much appreciative if someone could help me.

i clicked the link, and it says:

The 'Failed to lock index buffer' error will occur when you Alt+Tab to switch between windows while playing a game and your machine is unable to allocate sufficient memory to render graphics when you switch back to your game window.

The thing is that i dont alt-tab, that it stuffs up on its own, i ran the steam diagnostics tool, it says the the computer passed all the tests, then it says to:

If Steam continues to crash, try deleting all files and folders in the Steam directory except for steam.exe and the SteamApps folder

i do that and it still doesnt work, then it says to do this:

If you continue to have problems playing the games, try using the launch options -nosound and -windowed.

this works but do i seriously have to play it without sound and in a window??? payed all that money....
