I've got a big problem here. On most (almost every) server I go, I get a ''connection failed after 4 retries'' error. CSS worked for me from last year 'till now. When this started, I reinstalled the game and it's still the same thing.... What to do? Please oh please help!

EDIT

Found the problem... sorta.. Steam is getting me CS 1.6 servers through CSS :|

try the filter, and choose css servers
That doesn't work. There's a problem VALVe's end with The filter accepting Counter-strike source as just Counter-strike and therefore 1.6 is showing up.

Like when you type in de_dust, de_dust2 also shows up, as well as any de_dust[custom] maps.

i get that same pronblem, it gets two bars and then just stops. It happens to me in DOD source and CS source, but not in half life 2 deathmatch or mods for it. the servers that work for me have some "mani admin plugin" or something similar but i have to download it every time to join the server.

This happens because there is still a bug in the browser, VALVe needs to fix it still. You are just trying to connect to a non-Source server so try a bunch of servers and the ones you like I recommend saving them, then you won't have the issue anymore.

yeah i would just save the servers that worked to my favorites. now if i just click the servers section of the steam icon, they all work.

is valve gonna fix this soon?
because this is ruining my time......
i can only play on like 10 servers

I have the same problem on some servers but not all. Most of them i can get into but a few i still cant get into.

READ WHAT GAME YOU ARE TRYING TO CONNECT TO.

If it says Counter Strike:Source you will be able to connect to that, if it says Counter Strike, you won't be able to, obviously.

I have had this problem since probably August 2005 on every online game...DOD, CS, HL:DM, etc... It has a mind of it's own. It works when it feels like working, which is why I paid for and dl DOD:S. It was working, then it just stopped. I tried contacting Customer Support, but it didn't really get me anywhere.

I gave up on Steam in September 2005, and decided to retry it a few months later. I still encountered the same problem. There is no god lol Has anyone come up with a solid solution for this so I can get into every server?

i have almost the same problem, but I made server and when my friend tries to join it sais:"connection failed after 4 retries"

set sv_lan 0 and make sure you have the correct ports forwarded on your router

I've got the problem to. But I can't connect one of them!
hundreds of servers I tried. Thousands of server to go. I'm really sick and tired of it.

Can somebody please give a solution?

*don't ask questions like I'm some sort of layman* :hmph:

Have you got anywhere an article explaining how to forward to your router? My friend has a problem with his servers, and I told him about that, but don't know how.

The ports needed for Steam are (copied from Steampowered support):
Steam Client
UDP 1200 (For the Friends service)
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
TCP 27020 to 27050 inclusive
Dedicated Server
UDP 27015 and 27020 (Default HLDS, SRCDS and HLTV ports)
TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

Note: Windows XP SP1 firewall users running Source Dedicated Server must open TCP Port 27015 for Rcon to work
