Friend of mine just got a new ntl cable modem and hasn't managed to get it to work yet. When he was installing the drivers that came with it, he didn't follow the instructions and he plugged the modem in right from the beginning and not from the point where it says "you can now plug your modem in" and it screwed it up somehow. Now, everytime he boots up, he is asked to insert the installation disk but when he does, it loads up and then a dialogue box comes up that just says "closing" and the program doesn't do anything.

I have tried uninstalling all of the software that i can see and the "closing" dialogue box still comes up. The cable modem is seeing the Eternet card when it is plugged into the ethernet card and the computer detects the modem when connected through usb, the cable modem locks onto the data frequency on the cable line absolutely fine and i am able to renew and repair the ip address. The only problem is, Internet Explorer doesn't do anything at all.

Reformat? I haven't had any problems like this but if it's been awhile since he has then I would go ahead and try that. Or try it on another system and see if it works if you don't want to wipe the system.

I didn't want that to be an option until after he's phoned up tech support on Monday. If it doesn't work, i will give him that option.
