The Cybercast News Service, a conservative site, claims in a report published this morning that best-selling Xbox 360 title Mass Effect contains ?explicitly graphic sexual intercourse.?

The charge seems to be based on a well-known episode in the game in which there is a romantic liaison between the player?s character and an NPC. However, in our view, it?s quite a stretch to describe what appears onscreen as explicitly graphic sexual intercourse, which generally denotes hard core pornography.

The game is ?clearly marketed to minors,? Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Research Council, told Cybercast News Service.

?There are cultural implications for feeding porn to kids in this way,? ?Ruse said

Unfortunately, Mass Effect? even goes so far as to allow homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality outside of its proper context of marriage.

Attorney Ruse also painted the love scene in the game as porn in the legal sense:

Most states have what?s called ?Harmful to Minors? laws on the books that say that selling sexual material that a jury would deem ?patently offensive to minors, which lacks literary, artistic, political or scientific value.? ? might be prosecutable.

We need state and local prosecutors with spines and backbones to prosecute some of these companies that are violating the law.

why the hell is this only a problem in the US? why havent I heard from anyone else that Mass Effect is indeed porn? Is it true? does Mass Effect lack literary, artistic, political or scientific value? cuz if so you can pretty much get rid of whole genres of film but why stop there? I'm sure there's plenty of media out there that these prudes would like banned ..simply for the sake that they dont recognise them as having "literary, artistic, political or scientific value.? ..americans need to put a stop to this type of moral nazism before it's too late

btw:

Cybercast News Service (CNS) is a subsidiary of the conservative news monitoring group, the Media Research Center (MRC)?

Media Research Center Inc. is a conservative media watchdog group run by president and founder Brent Bozell. The Center? is funded by larger right-wing foundations?

go to hell fundamentalist morons

Such bullshit...

I heard an audio bit this morning on the radio of a kid on Dr. Phil blaming Microsoft for all the racism he was encountering on xbox live....a guy on the show said thats sort of like bulldozing a street that people were seen arguing on. Im pretty sick of people blaming games for all the problems in their life.

There's porn in this game and I still haven't touched it yet? <glances at Xbox 360>

ya there was some Dr Phil nonsense story the other day where he did a feature on a black dude didnt want his kids of xbox live cuz of all the racism ..saying they had threatened him and his family ..he could have just turned the moron's mike off

I watched bits and pieces of the clip ..where's the nudity? I saw a profile of an ass ..no crack ..is that what passes for nudity these days?

Ill be completely honest in saying im probably going to look into getting mass effect now....any inclination of lesbians and im there :)

anyways, i saw an ass, thats about it. god help us if hillary gets elected, all i can say

why the hell is this only a problem in the US?

It's not. Game content is bitched about and censored all over the world. Aside from being rated AO, I can't remember a single game being banned in the US. And being AO is a de fact o banning simply because no manufacturer allows the game on their console. The game gets reworked and released as an M.

So, it's really not much of a problem, unless you think the problem is people spewing general bullshit out of their speak-holes. That is a problem...unfortunatly not you or I are able to do anything about it.

americans need to put a stop to this type of moral nazism before it's too late

Why? This shit is hiilarious. They have a completely UNdefendable position...just like everyone else that tries to complain and get something done about game content.

not really ..at least not in the west ..sure countries like australia ban violent video games but as a whole most western countries dont ban games ..I cant think of a single game that was banned in canada

Aside from being rated AO, I can't remember a single game being banned in the US.

it might as well because a AO rating is the kiss of death in retail ..not a single bix box retailer will carry an AO game

And being AO is a de fact o banning simply because no manufacturer allows the game on their console. The game gets reworked and released as an M.

but by then they'd have lost money/sales momentum

So, it's really not much of a problem, unless you think the problem is people spewing general bullshit out of their speak-holes. That is a problem...unfortunatly not you or I are able to do anything about it.

i think it is a problem ..when people who have no clue speak for gamers then it's a problem ..they have no right saying what we can or cant consume

Why? This shit is hiilarious. They have a completely UNdefendable position...just like everyone else that tries to complain and get something done about game content.

they pulled GTA: SA off the shelves, even the copies that didnt/couldnt have Hot Coffee installed. Rockstar lost an estimated $40 million ..they did affect change ..people outside the gaming industry changed video content because they didnt approve of it ..that doesnt sit well with me

Laughable! I expand in my blog but...yea laughable!

not really ..at least not in the west ..sure countries like australia ban violent video games but as a whole most western countries dont ban games ..I cant think of a single game that was banned in canada

Neither can I. Not in the US either. So what exactly about this is exclusive to the US again? Is it simply the nonsense these people are spewing that you are talking about?

it might as well because a AO rating is the kiss of death in retail ..not a single bix box retailer will carry an AO game

Agreed. But still de facto. Majority AO games are straight porn.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AO-rated_products

So, if you want to consider games "art" like movies, etc., they're going to fall under similar restrictions and benefit from certain rights as well. Last I checked, I couldn't pick up a XXX porn at K-Mart. Certainly does NOT stop the porn or game from being made and distributed. These are the same restrictions that, in the end, shut these morons up time and again.

but by then they'd have lost money/sales momentum

Go talk to Nintendo, Sony and MS. Developers know what the console makers are going to allow and not allow. Nintendo, Sony and MS do NOT allow AO games on their consoles as a regulation and they're most certainly in the gaming "industry". If you're going to make a game that lands an AO rating, you better think about where you want it released first. This is not unique to any region of the world. Most AO games in existance are destined for Mac or PC...not exactly hitting the core gaming audience.

they pulled GTA: SA off the shelves, even the copies that didnt/couldnt have Hot Coffee installed. Rockstar lost an estimated $40 million ..they did affect change ..people outside the gaming industry changed video content because they didnt approve of it ..that doesnt sit well with me

1) Hot coffee could be unlocked on all versions of the game...PC and console. Rather easily I might add.

2) Who is they?? At this point in our discussion, I think we need to start considering the ESRB a "part" of the gaming industry. The biggest brunt of RockStars losses came from the ESRB rerating the game an AO. That's when it really started disappearing from shevles because most retailers won't carry an AO. So, who ripped it off of shelves?? Retailers have had rules on AO games LONG before the Hot Coffee extra revealed itself.

3) I'll just say this, if the Hot Coffee extra had been a normal part of the gameplay and storyline in SA, the game would have had an AO from the start. As discussed above, developers know the risks associated with releasing a game destined for an AO.

Further, this was a completely different scenario from the one we're talking about...none of this stuff is hidden in Mass Effect...these people complaining are just morons. Some of the people pissed about Hot Coffee somewhat had a point...but, IMO, are still hypocrits as the other content is no better/worse than simulating sex. Mass Effect is rated appropriately which is the reason these peoples complaints will never make it past conservative banter.

i think it is a problem ..when people who have no clue speak for gamers then it's a problem ..they have no right saying what we can or cant consume

Huh?? These people speak for themselves, afaic.

Well, since nothing of substance ever comes from these sociopaths and their ranting diatribes about video game content, I'm inclined to think this is less of an issue than you think it is. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong.

Mrs. Clinton.

Yes, this is ridiculous, but since when is the right-wing not ridiculous and inflamatory? To call what happens in Mass Effect graphic by any means is a serious stretch of the imagination. You see more in FHM or Maxim than you do in ME. You can get LOADS more pr0n on the Internets and it is so much easier to access than the scene in ME too--should we ban the Internets too? Watch everyone slide down their slippery slope to their <censored> deaths. They sound more afraid of the homosexuality of it than the graphic sex part of it...its all very sad and scary.

Neither can I. Not in the US either. So what exactly about this is exclusive to the US again? Is it simply the nonsense these people are spewing that you are talking about?

they dont have to ban in order to affect games ..as i pointed out Jack Thompson single handedily caused Rockstar to lose $40 million ..or at least he set the ball in motion

Agreed. But still de facto. Majority AO games are straight porn.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AO-rated_products

yes however publishers know beforehand that a AO rating is a kiss of death ..content is cut so that it wont recieve an AO rating because the wal-marts of this world wont carry it

So, if you want to consider games "art" like movies, etc., they're going to fall under similar restrictions and benefit from certain rights as well. Last I checked, I couldn't pick up a XXX porn at K-Mart. Certainly does NOT stop the porn or game from being made and distributed. These are the same restrictions that, in the end, shut these morons up time and again.

well the defintion of porn that pertains to the law against distrubution is the word "obscene" which incidentily is why legislators are trying to equate games with porn ..or at least violent games to porn ..the sticking point is the term "obscene" ..the violence in a game would have to be termed as obscene in order for it to be regulated like the porn industry ..the problem is interpretation

Most AO games in existance are destined for Mac or PC...not exactly hitting the core gaming audience.

but it's to do with availability of distrubution channels ..wal-mart makes for the bulk of game sales, they get to decide what a game content is ..and more

1) Hot coffee could be unlocked on all versions of the game...PC and console. Rather easily I might add.

hot coffee on pc and hot cofee on consoles: two different things ..one was easily accesible, the other not so much:

wiki said:
Although the "Hot Coffee" minigame was completely disabled and its existence was only highlighted after the mod's release for the PC version in June 9, 2005,[1] the assets for the minigame were also discovered in both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, and people found ways to enable the minigame via console video game hacking tools.

2) Who is they?? At this point in our discussion, I think we need to start considering the ESRB a "part" of the gaming industry. So, who ripped it off of shelves?? Retailers have had rules on AO games LONG before the Hot Coffee extra revealed itself.

the game was pulled as soon as it was discovered to hold questionable material ..it wasnt re-rated until the esrb rerated it

3) I'll just say this, if the Hot Coffee extra had been a normal part of the gameplay and storyline in SA, the game would have had an AO from the start. As discussed above, developers know the risks associated with releasing a game destined for an AO.

I'm not so sure, there was no intercourse, it was all off camera ..all that was shown was boobies ..god of war had boobies

I'm not so sure ..most of the legislation lately has been from tradionally "liberal" sources: democrats like Leland Yee and Joe Lieberman ..even Hilary has gotten into the game (bad pun) ..she's called for gaming regulation

Huh?? These people speak for themselves, afaic.

I meant anti-gaming nuts in general

Well, since nothing of substance ever comes from these sociopaths and their ranting diatribes about video game content, I'm inclined to think this is less of an issue than you think it is. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong.

well this map keeps changing so they are gaining some ground

http://gamepolitics.com/legislation.htm

god of war had boobies
And 3-ways...and it was a mini-game to get more health! Awesome.

And all of GoW's "questionable" content is much more "graphic" and "frontal" than anything in ME. But notice how it is still hetero contact and as such perhaps not as "offensive"...:hmph:

Meh, fundy morons. Lets hope people like Dr. Phil just end up castrating themselves or something, and the world will be better off.

The world would be such a better place without these fools.

I'm just waiting for the larger videogaming generation to grow up and be the next generation's censors.

I wonder what'll happen then?

I have yet to see a thread where Stern doesn't multi-quote, analyse and take apart somebody elses post.

[This post is Stern-Proof (TM)]

If they think Mass Effect is porn then they need to see some decent porn.
