Considering Upgrading...

As the next gen games are slowly coming in my current rig is struggling to cope with the majority of new games out there.

Currently my specs are:


Memory (DDR RAM): 1024 MB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2399.8 MHz 3400+
Graphics: ATI RADEON 9800 SERIES

I'm thinking about getting one of the 640mb Nvidia Geforce 8800 Gts cards, anything else I should bother upgrading? Can give more details if need be.

Advice appreciated!

if you currently have enough to...then dont D:, the rest of the system will be a bottleneck so might as well save up for a new pc at this point, unless you want a graphics card less extreme. What graphics connection do you have anyways? I'm assuming AGP in which case you cant fit a 8800 into the motherboard anyways.

Seems like your system is pretty evenly distributed in terms of age (i.e. nothing stands out as being a major bottleneck). You will of course get a nice boost from a new video card, but your cpu and ram will hold it back. Personally I would save up and get all your new parts at once. Anyways are you sure you have a pci-e slot on your motherboard? I don't think the 8800's come in the AGP flavour.

you want a 2 x 1gb RAM setup for next years games!
And a random new AGP card, that should give you a healthy boost on the cheap!

I would just pick up a good AGP card really. Maybe an X1950pro or something. 9800s did well but they are a bit old now. That would be the most bang for your buck as far as an upgrade. Otherwise you'd probably have to buy all new. If you got a higher end GPU then it would be PCI-Express and you'd need to buy a new motherboard which would have a different CPU socket and memory.
