Consoles must embrace user-created content, says Valve

No they don't, then what good will PCs be?! D:

Don't you get it? All the crappy custom Halo maps will overflood all servers and ultimately kill the game! :D

Aren't the maps crappy anyway? :p

I had this debate with a mate during school today - freaky.

This seems too obvious to have a news article about it, but it's still interesting.

On the one hand, it's going to be very simple: release an SDK for PC and let people submit their mods online, then they can download it to their console. On the other hand, quality control is gonna be a bitch.

it's not going to happen ..not in the same way as in pc games ...developers/console makers dont really have an incentive to create the tools and infrastructure necessary for player made content ..I mean the console makers/publishers want you to buy more games not less ..if you're only playing a user made mod like for example counterstrike back when it was a mod, what incentive do you have in purchasing another fps if you already have one that fulfills your needs? ..now that's true for pc games however the difference being that an online community on pc can usually be measured in years, not so when it comes to consoles who's games (barring halo and a handful of others) last months ...how many people are still playing launch xbox360 titles online? console gamers tend to go through more games than pc gamers ..mostly because of the casual nature of many console games but also because since there's a limited online community for each game (and no mods, infrequent/no map updates etc)games die in popularity as they move on to the next xbox360 title

even if user made mods do come to consoles you can bet they'll be heavily regulated ..what's the chance of microsoft allowing nude skins, or a bill gates skin or gw bush or whatever? the pc is pretty much anything goes but in a closed system like xboxlive there's bound to be issues around the appropriateness of certain played created content

I've got an idea, how about Console stop trying to be PC's and just die? Thats all consoles are - gimped PC's missing most everything that make PC's great.

Everyone get a ****ing PC instead. That simple. If people change, and stop buying the shit, and buy PC games - together, we could change the world. :sniper:

Imagine there were no consoles. The sun is shining and birds are chirping... er wait, thats a bit thick.

If there were no consoles, then all of the games would be available for the PC. This means they don't have to develop 3 or 4 versions of a game for different systems. They got the job done sooner, the games don't have to be gimped and missing graphic quality, the controlls would be perfect.

Since everyone is on the same platform, you don't have the problem where one friend is playing Xbox mutliplayer, and you are playing PS3 multiplayer of the same game.

Now everyone has a hard drive, everyone has keyboard, mouse, gamepad, whatever input you need is available, and you don't have to buy one for each system.

I could go on forever, but it would be nice if there were no more exclusive games, they all joined hands and made games for the PC damn it.

Nintendo can make interesting peripherals and gameboy to PC attachments, and cool controllers that games can use, Sony can go back to fixing what used to be Everquest and making cool peripherals, and Xbox team can go back to making games and peripherals too.

Consoles are for people who want a gaming fix, PC gaming is more of a lifestyle, user-created content is what sets the two groups apart

I agree. In the meantime, consoles will do fine, but once DX10 starts to take hold, getting rid of cap bits and such, and hardware starts to become cheaper to produce (and once low-end hardware starts becoming powerful enough to run bleeding-edge games at over 30fps), PCs will most definitely make a comeback.

hardware is extremely cheap to produce....also i doubt low end hardware will meet up to that standard.

That's the most sense I've heard all day :)

Very nicely put.

I kind of like just being able to kick back on the couch, grab a wireless controller and just know that everything will work. For me, PC gaming is a more intense experience, when I'm ready to lean in close to the screen and get really involved. I also have a sadistic enjoyment of tweaking performance and hunting for mods. Console gaming is for when I just want to kick back. They're both great.
