continuos crashing in half life 2

I used to be able to play half life 2 fine and went through the whole game with no problems, but then I came back to play it again recently and it crashes continuously at the same points for no obvious reason. If i set the options to '-nosound' then it runs fine so it may be something to do with the sound, the thing is that i used to play it on an AC97 integrated sound card before the crashing started but then when it did start I decided that upgrading to a soundblaster audigy may solve the problem, but to no avail. Episode One is now doing exactly the same thing but it doesn't happen to counter strike source or half life deathmatch or any of the mods that I have/had installed. I tried re-installing the game and have been e-mailing steam support for the last two months or so and even they cannot help me. When I start the game with the console visible it says:

After this if I try to load the game it crashes as soon as G-man starts to speak, just after it says half life 2, but if it is on -nosound then the game runs and the console says:

If that makes sense to anybody. When the game crashes and it allows me to send an error report when I got onto seeing the details it says:

I think thats all the information that I have to give you, if someone could please help me with this I would be extremely grateful.
 
My sound and video drivers are up to date and I have uninstalled the AC97 card to stop it conflicting with my sound blaster audigy.
