"It seems as though some new technology used to read brain activity has been applied to the Source engine. The video applies the new technology to the Source engine allowing the user to move objects with their mind and not through the use of a keyboard or mouse.

In this video, scientists have developed a great technology that lets you ?control? objects, via electric interface, based on your levels of concentration and emotion. It is interfaced with the brain, analyzing pre-recorded responses and translating them to the electronic interface, essentially making a person a telepath that can control objects with thoughts.

No word yet on whether or not we'll see this in Episode 3."

What if they use Steam to record and display people's thoughts?

If this makes its way to HL2 it'd be:
"Hey, pick up that can"
"I want to, but I forgot the thought I bound to pick things up"
"pick up the can!"
"I'M TRYING!"
*gets out stun-stick*
"AAAARGH!"

Awesome. Now Valve should create Prospero. Psionic amplifiers FTW :)

Only 15$?
Thats completely WICKED! I'm gonna pick that thing up when they start modding Windows to run it.

Imagine implenting this into scary games too. A feature could be employed that when you think something is gonna happen, nothing happens, etc.

Ahaha holy shit, that would be so perfect. Just make something pop out when it detects you are calm. This is exactly what horror game designers try to figure out when designing levels, now they have it given to them.

w..o...wwwwwwww
Rout canal on brain waves........

Things will be falling of my hands on every behind the corner zombie !

They had an Unreal Engine demo at GDC... I was one of the very few to actually be inside the room with the device. Usually they forced everyone to stay outside a glass wall, but I actually got to go inside, and do a meet and greet with the people controlling it and those developing it. Really interesting stuff actually.

Would be an awesome experience with games.

Although I wouldn't want to use that for anything with consequences. If the person using it lost focus and the brain sends the wrong signal to the chip.
What if someone in a wheel chair at crosswalk speeds into traffic at the wrong time. :O

This isn't really NEW per say, only its implementation into the source-engine is, this technology has been around for quite some time, maybe not in Source but in other software etc(Including some smaller games), it's primarily been used to allow for example completely paralyzed people to play computer games(Such as pong and Tetris), very interesting none the less.

As cool as this is, I can't help but imagine some ****ing neo-apocalyptic world in which every military has every soldier hooked up with a really advanced version of this. Tanks are now operated by one crewman, with full psych-driving, targeting, firing, and reloading, all carried out by mere thought. If the crewman can spot a target through any optical system visibly, all he does is think "KABLAMO" and said target is toast.

God that's scary.

either that, or just robotize the tanks.

This is probably the cheapest and most innovative way to use the technology IMO. I've seen this done many times before using expensive equipment at universities, but never in a $15 headset.

Another interesting technology: BrainGate. It uses motor functions instead of emotions, but requires a brain implant.

I can't seem to watch that video, is there a youtube one?

How 'bout the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away... with mind bullets! :cheese:

Great reference, sir! Long live the D!

But no, don't robotize the tanks. Not only does that defeat my post ( :) ), I would also imagine a computer taking longer than the human brain to function, no?

Oh man, implementing this in a Psi - Ops sequel would be so awesome.

"Die mother****er!"
*BUUUUUUUUUUUURN!*
"Oh God! Help!"

Finish the bastard off with a telekinetic slam into an explosive canister. Your mind is the ultimate weapon.

Don`t really see the point of it, I`ll pwn anyone with my mouse and keyboard. But it`s cool I quess :|

It's like, REALLY INCREDIBLY USEFUL, for disabled people.

You probably just have to get used to it... once you master it though, im sure that you could be more accurate than you could ever be with just a mouse, im guessing that it will take more practice, but with a higher potential pay off.

But for now it's probably the coolest gimmick ever, if it gets to the point where you can perform actions with accuracey, and it can be made to be fun and not really frustrating, then by all means make games for it and sell them.
