I was having an issue with purple/black checkerboard graphics on all wall/floor/ceiling surfaces and wireframe faces with no textures on them with no bodies, and a messed up out of focus main menu.
Here's what i did after trying various versions of video drivers (4.10, 4.11, 4.12)
I reinstalled XP. Then i installed the latest chipset (motherboard) drivers from Asus, then installed dx9c redist, then installed audio drivers and patched them, then installed catalyst 4.11. Installed the game (had to redownload it, so left it overnight), fired it up and presto it works (thank the lord all mighty). I installed SP2, and its still working. Issue was probably related to corrupt video drivers.
I know reinstalling just to play a game seems like much, but i hadnt reinstalled for quite some time and had alot of crap that 'could' have been causing the problem. But i still dont understand why my CS:S worked flawlessly yet hl2 was fubar.
