i wonder what will result with hundreds thousands of poeple tryin to activate their copy of hl² what do u think about that?

I'm sure they will be ready. I doubt it will take much on the part of the server to activate copies of the game.

yes lol... im glad I am away for that reason, by the time I come back (night of the 17th) the world and his dog should have hopefully activated and it wont take me long lol

the thread above this asks the same question. personally i think it will be fine, maybe a little slow tho

Nope. They've increased the bandwidth, and the activation is much less intense for servers than the preloads were.

I think the downloading might be the only issue, even though the increased bandwidth will help. I don't foresee a problem if you've already preloaded it, but I could be wrong.

Either activate right when its released (3 AM EST) or wait a few hours because between the release time and probably noon it'll be chaotic. Also will probably be bad around 2 PM-7 PM when people are getting home from school/work.

As long as they don't throw in some stupid picture to go with the progression bar they should know what is to come.

Definately not.

By the time I get back from school, it should be calmed down. :)

Oh, so now people are starting to wake up to all the possible issues the Steam crap introduces ?

Yes, it could happen, their servers coudl crash, your ISP could have problems on the day it's released...etc..etc and that's what makes it so stupid !

Even MS has phone activation !

It could happen...I would laugh if it happens.

What if they unlock it, the servers shits, they lock it, but my retail copy is already installed. Hehe.

Oh, don't worry; this is one of the hundreds of not-so-interesting topics which would have minor effects that have been discussed a long time. Not like it helps, though.

I doubt it will slow anything down, I mean activation takes what, like 2 seconds?

The activation shouldn't take very long. I think they're prepared for massive amount of people who's gonna activate their copy :)

definite crash going to happen, either that or they will limit the number so you may have to queue a bit b4 u activate.

might crash the server's , look at the steam forums last night , they had to close due to the amount of people viewing

They've probably thought it through really carefully. The only things they likely need to send is a key and maybe a few DLLs, probably less than 1MB.

Well I have already pre-loaded it but I am waiting for my key from Amazon :)

It depends how much data they need to send back.

If it is a simple key system, it could be as little as 50-100 k. If that happens, the steam servers shouldn't have any problems in terms of bandwidth, but connections may be a problem (have to wait in a queue because only so many people can be connected at once). However with such a small size the queues should vanish pretty quick.

If you are required to download a key and some other critical files (fairly likely, although we don't really know) then it could be around 800k-1meg, which will put a little bit of stress on steam, but not really any more than the preloads did. However connections/queues will become more of a problem as people are stuck behind 56k-ers and others who are trying to activate (retail copies also need to activate, remember).

But, in my rather clue-less prediction, looking at how they handled the preload, the activation should be a piece of cake.
