Hi, I am a bit of a noob to the world of computer gaming and feel a bit small in the midst of you guys here, but i wanted to ask for a bit of help. I've bough a new computer in anticipation for halflife 2 and i'm having a bit of trouble installing XP onto it. I downloaded the program from microsoft that creates six boot up disks - i run them and i get to the point where it tells me to press enter to start the setup. Once i do it tells me this -

Setup cannot find a CD - Rom drive. Make sure your cd rom drive is on and properly connected to your computer. If it is a SCSI CD-rom drive, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. See if your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for mor information.

I have a ASUS A7V8X-X mobo with a XP 3000+ proccessor if this helps.

I have made sure everything is connected and is switched on etc so i don't know why the hell its complaining.

Any help or links to where i can get any is apreciated.

Make sure you CDROM drive's jumpers are set correctly (Master/Slave).
And make sure it is being detected in bios correctly. Press Del after you power up your PC, it says what key to hit and when on the screen)

If you have a Windows XP CD, I would try to boot from it instead. I find that easier. Just have to make sure (in bios) that CDROM is set as the first boot device.

Ive had my Harddrive jumper set incorrectly before and yet my cdrom is the thing that it didnt detect. I would check all your drives. If you have a single drive on a IDE cable, make it Master.

Also make sure you have Molex power connectors to all your drives :)

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give the bios a check over and see what i come up with, ta.

I've checked the bios and it tells me that the primary master is maxtor . . . . . so im guessing thats the hard drive, but under primary slave it says disabled. The secondary master and slave are also both disables could this be my problem???

I can't seem to open to Cd rom drives to put the disk in the first place :-( And what are these jumper things you mentioned. Thanks for your help.

Because you cannot open the CDrom drive would lead me to believe you do not have power to the drive.
I would open the case up and make sure the CD Drive has power.
Plenty of Molex power connectors in there. Grab one near by that is unused and put it in the the Drive. On the CDROM drive the IDE should be in the middle of the back. The power where the molex connector goes should be closest to you (to the right of the IDE cable).
Then check bios.
If it doesnt work, reply.

ok, here is where im at. I opened up the case and had a look inside. I made sure that all of the connections were snug etc and everything seemed to be fine. When i fire up the comp now i can open and close the drives but only during POST. I checked the BIOS to see if i could set the cd drive to boot from but it only gave me the following options.

[disabled] [legacy Floppy] [LS-120] [ZIP] [ATAPIMO] [USB FDD] [USB ZIP/Flash]

thanks for being patient with me as i am really a noob to this-formely console only. . . :)

oh, the options above are under [Removable Device [legacy Floppy]]

the other categories are IDE hard drive, ATAPI CD ROM (which only has disabled as it's option) , and oother boot devices should i be looking in any of these???

i've tried messing with those slave/master settings but i just get an error thrown at me unless it's set to the hard drive as the Primary Master
and the rest left blank.

AAAARGH!! :flame: :flame: :flame:

I got so nuts that i just took it to a technician. Turns out the people who built it for me had inserted the wrond IDE cable or something. Anyway it's running like a dream now, so it was worth it.

Thanks for all of your help!!

Gr8 =)

I know how mad you can get when you realise what morons it is that has built the computer... When i got mine, they had put the jumper pinns in a position that the computer was working in a Speed 700Mhz under what it should...

Luckeliy, i didn't need to go to a technichan... =)
