Coups and shit in Thailand

Not much probably.

There's been... 18 coups in the past 60 years?

looks like civil war if it's not immediately resolved

BBC said:
Thai media say that two army factions appear to be heading for a clash, with one side backing the prime minister and the other side backing a rebel army chief.

Guess to where I have paid plane tickets for at the begining of December?

Heh, we might see some cool recordings of those armies clash on CNN.
Guess no vacation there for a while :S

Not much probably. Can't see anything really coming of it right now. Same with Hungary.

Two of my roomates are Thia. One lives in Bangkok when he's not going to school here in the States. He called his folks and they said they had gone to the pool and then were eating outside while it was taking place. Sounds fairly benign to me.

My old flatmate is on Songkla next to hat yai which is in the south of the country far away from whats going on in Bangkok.

From recent reports up until now everything is pretty calm and the police and military have ordered poeple off the streets until further notice.

My flatmate said that everything is eerily calm and is awaiting news from the British embassy.

I will keep youi guys posted on new news thats not been doctired in anyway away ie bbc, fox news

They have a tendancy to do that

just a thought

I love the title of this thread. "Coups and shit".

The Tai military has style though, one has to admit.

"We have deposed the primeinister and taken control of the country. Sorry for the inconvinence"*

I'm fairly confident that the situation will stay cool and that the military will stay true to its word on having new elections fairly soon. Hell, they've even said that they'll let the deposed priminister run again if he wants to. Hopefully, this will be resolved quickly and without bloodshed.

*not actual qutoe, but it was along those lines.

EDIT: Just looked at the advertising at the top of the page. Wow. I can call the newly installed regime for the cost of a national call! Awesome!

Most of the people seem not to be too affected by this, although im sure many things will change for them. Reminds me of the movie "Terminal", except no one is stuck at the airport. :)

Would have been nice if this happened in the US. Military machine declares "No mister Bush, you're an arse, corrupt, ugly and a bad statesman" and then initiates some real elections.

Not much will happen. It's almost a tradition. And in my opninion the military did a good thing.
The prime minister really f*cked up. Lot's of corruption and other stuff
I do hope that there will be elections soon. So nobody gets any ideas....
This is a good lesson for us. Maybe politicians have the power but the people can take it away.

Its not a revolution of the people. It's a military coup. Not good.

Coups aren't really revolutions anyway.
True, but they can have the support of the people.
I don't like the idea of a military otherthrowing a democratically elected government like whats happened. Can't lead to good things.

Maybe this will be an inspiration for us all. Maybe every country with corrupt governments will rise! GLOBAL REVOLUTION!

governments are rarely overthrown because they're corrupt ..in fact most coups install a much worse government than the one they're replacing ..at least that's the case in south/central america ..then again they had foreign help

Sounds like the people all support it anyway.

But yeah, throwing out leaders is best left to the elections.

:naughty: Yes

But sadly the same is true in Africa.
I do think people in Thailand are behind the coup. Now is the time for a fresh start. They should start organizing new elections.
And revolution is mostly very bloody. With death marters and hero's. This is maybe less exiting but I like my reality more that way ;)

Why can't someone do that here?

Oh that's right, we're all too lazy and under the supervision of Big Brother.

sounds like a lot of the Thai people are happy that the military and police have sorted out the politicians, people aren't expecting violence so hopefully their won't be any.

Military Revolutions are awesome. And in this case, the Thai people are taking pictures of tanks and getting their picture taken in front of military vehicles.

A large amount of the tourists said they either didn't realise that anything had happened or that the military were keeping a very low profile and being very relaxed.

The Army has the support of the people. It is Thaksin himself doesn't have it. Thaksin was involved in corruption and several major failures in dealing with bird flu. I can see the army do everything in peace, and the leader pledged to organize a formal democratic election as soon as possible. This coup is good for Thailand after all.

Ah, all political movement and independent thought has been suspended for the time being.

*shoots imaginary drink out of his mouth in a spray of disbelief*

Just about every revolution, EVER, has been a military coup of sorts. What the hell are you talking about? The only real "revolution of the people" that i can think of was the french revolution, and that was a bloodbath of executions and paranoia.

Stop thinking in communist slogans man, it rots your brain.

80% of the Thai people support this coup, according to polls. This guy has post-phoned the election once already, who's to say he wouldn't have done it again? Maybe this was for the best.

Erm. The russian revolution wasn't, well... not really.
