Right I’ve been stuck on this old rig for 3 years now and with HL2 approaching now’s the time to get a new one. What Id like an opinion though is which would really be the better option when totally disregarding price?

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition or AMD Athlon 64 FX-53

and Graphics: GeForce 6800 Ultra or RADEON X800 Pro.

I’m currently aiming at the AMD/GeForce but I figure I may as well ask peoples opinion because no doubt most of you know allot more about the stated items than me. :)

get the AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 and an x800 xt. If your on a budget you can go with the x800 pro.

Heheh that cracks me up.

A64's run games best if thats what you are going to do.
They are the best for I/O and memory speeds/latency as well as being a powerful core that isn't a space-heater.

Either the 6800 or the x800 will work great.
Many seem to perfer the x800 with titles like HL2 coming up along with the lower power requirements.

Your right poor wording. I meant its cheaper then the x800 xt. You cant really call it a budget card when its that expsensive.

the x800xt will get you better perforamance in most things except doom3, although the 6800u will make game slike far cry look preiter when they release the SM3.0 patch.

bopth the cards over amazing power and speed, so in 95% of games, you won't notice any difference between them.

For once money isnt going to be much of a factor for me so the extra costs and higher requirements of the 6800 Ultra dont bother me. I was more conserned someone may say something like "oh if you pair that CPU with that Graphics card you may get problems" for what ever reason that may of been. Also this rig will be for pure gaming. :P thx

I had basically the same question and Asus has pretty much convinced me to get the A64. Along with some research I did on my own I feel that for gaming the A64 would be a better fit.

I'll also go with the x800 because I do not want to have to install cooling and mutiple fans in my cpu. x800 uses less power.

If you have the money, get the XT, there is a large(r) performance gap this time between the pro and the XT then with the 9800 pro and XT.
