I'm planning on getting a new gaming system for half-life 2. I don't know that much about motherboards and cpus except that mostly everyone here recommends the AMD-64 bit processors and the asus motherboards. What's so good about the AMD-64 processors? Why is it better than the P4? Since the p4 has higher clock speeds, shouldn't it run faster? Also, what's the difference between a 940-pin and 939-pin cpu? Any input would be appreciated.

Welcome,

1) A64 offer faster performance as they are able to deal with 2x the streams of data or something like that plus they offer future proofing for products such as Windows 64 in a few years time.

2)No the p4 will not run faster as it is 32 bit plus amd always use slower frequencies but acieve similar results to their intel peers, i tihnk the fx53 runs 30% faster than an athlonxp3200 so will b similar performance incrase agianst a 3.2 ghz p4.

3)939 is newer and slightly faster than socket 940 , plus i think its going to be the amd standard for a while so it makes upgrading easy.

Hope that helps a bit, and good luck with your new computer :bounce:

thanks. that helps

where do I get the motherboards that support the 939-pin AMD cpus? If I'm not mistaken, asus only has one. What are some other good mobos? It doesn't seem like there are too many out there.
