How long can a CPU go without a fan? CPU in question is a q6600 and cooler is a Zalman 9500. The fan will jitter, but will not spin. I'm afraid to deliver power again for fear it might burn up the MoBo (happened on my previous rig). All I want to do is get into the BIOS and see if the fan is being given power. I have powered the system twice for a period of time not longer than 3 second each. I am afraid to try it any more.

About 5 seconds. You need a working fan on it, there's no way around it.

Any ideas on why the fan isn't spinning? I'm currently disconnecting everything to try to boot with CPU, MoBo, PSU, RAM and VGA only.

I've seen some fans not turn on but if you give them a spin they are able to keep up the motion. Generally when they are not getting quite enough power. Wouldn't be reliable but maybe enough to get into bios if it works. But I'm not there so I don't know why your fan stopped.

the cpu should be fine if you at least have the heatsink on it. most cpus have a failsafe on them anyways when they reach a certain temperature.
