got a big prob
i just installed a new athlon xp 2800 barton @ 333 mhz fsb
installation of the cpu and heatsink went smoothly
however, the BIOS settings are giving me grief
the 2800 is supposed to be set at 166 by 12.5 to reach 2.03ghz as default
however i have it set low right now because whenever i try and change the settings to what theyre meant to be, windows shuts down and gives me a blue screen error to protect my comp
i have a feeling its my RAM..... could that be it?
my ram is all pc2100 266mhz... is that the problem? do i need 333mhz ram?
any help would be appreciated :|

What is your motherboard?

Also, what is your RAM set at, SPD or 100% (or some other setting)?

its an MSI 6712 with VIA chipset KT400
my RAM is set to SPD
and everything is auto

on many boards the speed of the RAM and the speed of the CPU bus/multiplier are linked and set together, limiting both to the weakest link/lowest common speed. however on many new mobo cpu settings and memory settings are completely independant. look carefully at all your bios settings.

Your ram doesn't have to be synchronous with the FSB, just make sure you change it to manual and have the ram clocked at 133Mhz whilst keeping the FSB at 166mhz.

well im pretty sure its the ram thats holding it back so im hgonna upgrade to pc2700 333mhz
thanks for the help
