My CPU fan is going on overdrive! its very very loud and the cpu is idling at 55C
in a game (such as DOD) it goes up to 70C its never been like this before and my PC is now heating up the entire room (its a very large room, the living room)
i can feel the heat emminating from the PC where im sitting now. so it begs the question

WHATS WRONG!?!?!?!?!

edit: its gone down to 50C now

edit: help!

Well, thats the stock speed alright.
Might want to check and make sure there still is thermal-paste between the chip and the heatsink.

there is, put some in last week. been fine til now

I'd check to make sure something didnt cause it to overclock somehow.

yeh the overclock fairy. damn her :S i cant see it overlocking itself while running. but i wouldnt know tbh. argh

Oh yah, it's very possible to overclock on the fly.
Download CPUZ to check ur clock speed.

my cpu is definately clocked at 3000mhz.
it runs at about 2960mhz ish when i last tried my cpu speed checker thing

edit: the cpu speed thing says 2953mhz. havent closed everything down though

CPU-Z says its clocked at 3.00ghz too

Heatsink isn't mounted properly, Dust is preventing air from circling in the heatsink, fan is not runnin at proper RPMs, Fan is not mounted properly, core voltage has been raised... etc.

I'm replacing my stock heatsink+fan with a kickass all-copper-plus-heat-pipe setup. I was getting 70ºC constantly before. Battlefield 2 has been shutting my computer off, and the dust wasn't even all that bad. It wasn't the thermal paste either, because the heatsink was that hot too! Damn you, Athlon 64 Socket 754!

If it is a problem with the heatsink/fan I'd reccomend replacing it with the one at the top of this page. I just put mine in today and my cpu temp is down to 30c from 41, and its really quiet when you slow down the fan, but when your gaming you can crank it up for maximum cooling. It supports loads of sockets too straight out of the box, including 775s.

Clean the computer with one of those compressed air cans.
I had this problem, and I fixed it by simply cleaning out the whole computer wtih a compressed air can, do that and see if it helps.

Whenever your computer is running, keep a constant stream of air from an upside-down compressed air can going, right on the heatsink. When you run out of air, start another one. Repeat. EOT.
