just wandering... I have two CPU's one is an Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz HT with 512kb cache memory. And the other is Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT with 1mb cache memory. which would u say runs games better?

it appears for me that the 1mb cache memory runs HL2 alot faster than the 512kb one, but it could just be me wat do u all think?

A larger cache does improve performance a bit, but the higher frequency of the 3.4ghz one leaps over that little performance loss. So the 3.4ghz cpu should be faster.

The CPU as a black box

When it comes to CPUs, the memory(cache) issue is more problematic.
more doesn't mean better.
It's note like adding more memory to your rig.
P4 with 1mb of cache is Prescot family if I'm not mistaken.
Prescot is NOT considered to be among the best CPUs of it's generation.
The best option for you, is to bench them both.
Happy gamin.

Good solid idea about benchmarking the 2 CPU's. However, I would use the CPU with the 1MB Cache and then overclock to make up the small difference in clock speed. It'll not be hard at all to overclock the 3.0GHz to 3.40GHz. Even cheap motherboards should be able to overclock that much provided the rest of your hardware can keep up, such as your RAM. All depends on your hardware.

yea, but then its the question of cooling. My PC runs hot already and it prob wont take the clock to 3.40. im thinking about saving and building my own up anyway.
