I downloaded a (completely legal) .rar file from a torrent, and discovered it has a password attached to it. Is there a quick way to crack these? I currently have a password cacker running on it, but unfortunately that still has over ten hours to go. Any ideas?

Brute force is the only way with .rar files I'm pretty sure, the encryption is 2-way (or something)

if there is a Web site adress in the name of the file then the password is likely to be the Website adress. Otherwise, there are softwares that can find the password by trying every single possibilities but if the pass has more than 6 characters it's gonna take ages to find it...

It's usually in the file's name. As said above, most likely a website.

The number off possibilities is the number of charactors to the power of the the lengh of the password, so using the standard ASCII table (256 chars) and a password lengh of 10, thats 1208925819614629174706176 possibilities. Plus you need to add all the numbers before 10 as well. And a decent computer can only get around 500,000 passes/sec.

In other words its gonna take a while :)

There's most likely a web adress in the file name, or the password is in the file name, or the password is the site addy from where you got the torrent.

Awesome, it was the web address in the file name. I really appreciate you help guys
