Crash and restart at beginning

OK. I love the series and finally got to sit down and start the HL2 EP2 game. After I get out of the rail car and go through the others. I end up by the rocks when the portal storm thingy cranks up. This is where the game goes black and the PC restarts.

FWIW, I have a 1.4 gig processor, 1.2gig memory, a ATI Radeon 512 vid card, and I do believe that all of my drivers are up to date.

Thoughts might be that your computer can't handle this game. Episode Two had a rehaul of the Source engine, meaning some computers which could play Half-Life 2 and Episode One cannot play Episode Two. Have you tried playing Portal?

That Super-portal/Portal Storm is quite a nasty one, and a lot of people complain of their computers slowing down. So I do believe your computer simply gives up and resets.

But then with the hardware you have, I'd recommend upgrading whatever. And quickly.

I'm also getting restarts on Ep1 now. It doesn't happen at a particularly intensive part of the game, just at the start of Lowlife, where you first enter the car park. I'm sure it's not a hardware problem as my system has no problem running Ep2, which apparently had a big engine rehaul and is greedier than Ep1. The graphics card can handle HDR, so it can't be being overwhelmed by Ep1. I've had a lot of trouble with drivers when playing Source games in the past, but I'm pretty sure they're all up to date now.
Ep1's always been erratic on my machine for some reason, so there's a fair chance that it'll work fine if I come back to play it in a week or so. Even so though, I'm sure this shouldn't be happening. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
