Crash loading saved game

My hl2 crashes every time I try to load saved games. I successfully loaded 2 different auto-saves, but now every time I try to load the most recent ones, loads up to about 2 bars left, sits there for a while, then shuts down to the desktop. During this time, I hear the generic windows 'error' sound, but no error is ever displayed on-screen. I don't know what to do, and I'm beginning to think I just wasted my money on a goddamn beta. CS:S and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch both work perfectly fine, just the singleplayer hl2 that causes me problems. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
My specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P4T-E
Chipset: Intel Pentium 4, 2ghz overclocked to 2.5ghz
Soundcard: Audigy Gamer
Video Card: Geforce 4 4400
RAM: 512 RDRAM

First time I've heard of problems like these.
Have you tried looking at http://steampowered.custhelp.com ?

If you can't find the answer to your question there, you can open a support ticket and they'll get back to you.

I'll give that a try. I looked through their support and there was nothing there, so I'll try opening a support ticket.
