Crash on level start

on my friends computer i can load up half life 2 just fine, but when i try to start the first level it gets done loading and then you see the blue screen of death for a spilt second and his comp shuts down

1.4Ghz athlon
512MB ram
Asus geforce 3 64mb PCI

does that even meet the minimum specs? if not i expect thats hwere the problem is
