Well, installed the game, (The "updating Steam Platform" took some time, I have a 4 Mb connection and the best I was getting was like 12 ks !) anyway it finished and I launched the game. It played great for about an hour, after I had a break I return and it just will not start up.
When I double click my Half Life 2 icon on my desktop the game starts to boot, gets about 1 or 2 seconds in and just as the guys face with the valve comes up my monitor powers down to stand by, the sound continues for another few seconds and then, nothing..........ctrl alt del, alt tab, nothing works, and I have to restart my whole system.....
Any suggestions would by greatly appreciated.
Cheers

My System:
P4 3.0G dual Core
Asus P5N32 SLi mobo
1G ram Crucial Ballistic
Geforce 7800 GTX
Western digital 250 HD
(Iiyama Vision Master pro.......resolution set at 1600 1200)

My source does that sometimes since the last update, same with hl2, infact, all source related games lol, maybe its a bug in the last update, maybe its me, i dunno :P

system crash

something similar happens to me. AND IT PISSES ME OFF.
I first noticed it around the time that they started useing that spiffy new lighting system they made.

is there a tech help desk i can call or mail for stam???
if so some one please let me know.

im not sure if its a hardware issue or a softwere thing, but I do know that I need help.
every time i play any of my steam games, they lock up my whole system after a couple min. they play fine for a while. then it acts like a lag but it never comes out of the lag. CTRL+ALT+DELETE has no effect, and all i can do is turn off the power and reboot. this has only started hapening a month or two ago.

I reinstalled steam with HL2 and CSS. that didn't work.
I even up-graded my video card from raidon 9800 pro to an X1600 pro (AGP) . it had no effect.
im running a 2.2ghz AMD athalon 64 with 1 gig of kingston ddr ram.

If anyone has any ideas im all ears.

Try putting this in the console:
mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0

Also try putting this parameter in front of your shortcut: "-32bit"

As long as i wont be losing any graphical quality with those 2 settings then i'll try it.

Woah woah woah that -32bit part only works on 64-bit CPU's you know :|

what do you mean by: (Also try putting this parameter in front of your shortcut: "-32bit")

do you mean the steam shortcut? in the name of it? please explain.

some one said something about the sorce engin not likeing the AMD chips
well... valve ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE AMD CHIPS, whatcha gunna do?

sound??

i went to a steam help page
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi...nMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1
it says it may be a problem with onboard sound.
then it refers you to a froum that has no answers in it.
but I did notice that most of the poeple on that forum (like myself) have an
ASUS Mother board. and they were useing the onboard sound for that one (like me)
the only solution in that forum was to buy a sound card.
and even then some of the people with soundcards still had the problem.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANSWERS AT ALL???
WHEN IS VALVE GUNNA FIX THIS?????

When you stop triple posting :) lol .... Well i havn't got an ASUS mobo and don't use Onboard sound so thats most definatly not it :| ... ... Hmmm, i managed to play it a while ago for a good few hours with no crashing. So maybe it's just random, if thats the case i can live with it, but if it becomes frequent, say every 10 - 20 minute frequent then i'll be slightly pissed :P

Nice rig by the way. Updates also took forever to download on my system for some reason, even though I have a very fast cable connection.

could the new lighting be the problem?

Drakard you don't have an AMD prossessor either...
im begining to suspect that valves updates (when they intigrated this new lighting engin to the game) screwed something up bigtime, and now its dissagreeing with alot of poeple.

(I first noticed the problem when playing the lost coast, a week later or so the same type of freezing problem occured in counterstrike, on de_Nuke, witch uses the same lighting thing. then the problem got worse and it started crashing on other maps that didn't use the new ligthting)

I hope they update again with a fix SOON

Yeah i noticed it mainly on HDR maps aswell, happened on LC a few times also.

Left-click on Steam tray icon.
Select "Games".
Click on the "My Games" tab.
Right-click on "Half-Life 2".
Select "Properties".
Click on the "Set Launch Options..." button.
Put in the window: -32bit
Press ok on all the windows and you're done ;)
