Got hl2 about a month ago, I had to wait to get my dad's old computer until I could play. now that i have it installed it is not up to par with the frame rate. i was going to lower the video settings in hope that it would speed the game up a bit, but after i exit out of the advanced video settings screen and click on apply, it crashes and brings me back to my desktop.

I have and AMD Duron 1.2Ghz and 384mb of ram.
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro video card

What did you try changing?
(The info u gave was, although the spec of ur PC which is nice to get, totally pointless without some idea of what you are actually doing)

funny, i had the exact same thing happen twice tonight when i changed my model detail and texture detail around to see if i could gain a few fps

strange:dozey:

it doesnt matter what i change, even if i go into the advanced settings and dont change anything it will crash after i click ok and then i get the windows error sound twice.

Hmm, that certainly doesn't make any sense ... does this only happen with this window? Have you tried validating your game files?

You will get that error with that videocard. Did you know that you are using an incredibly old DX 6 card that is unsupported by half life. It will never get good frame rates. I know this because I have tried to get half life 2 running on the same card before. I have done every console command to lower graphics and it still doesnt help in most situations. Dont try to change settings just get a better computer. Also because its a duron it is actually below minimum CPU requirements because of its reduced cache.

Aha! This man is a genius. I agree with him too ...

Try This.

These are some good comands here and should help.

Try.

go into the options menu of Half-Life2

go into the control settings and click on console

Type- or copy and paste- 1 or all 3 of these commands:

+map_background none (this removes the main menu graphics. NOW you may adjust your video settings. Adjusting them while mid-game is good chance your system will fail to respond or crash to desktop)

+mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0
(this made my game run much better but YOUR game may not work untill you erase it) OK?

+mat_mipmaptextures 0
(this is a fix if you have screwed up textures, but you can type a 1 instead of 0 and your game will work alot smoother on a slow computer.

*be sure and put a space in between multiple entries(if you type more than one) like this:

+map_background none +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0 +mat_mipmaptextures 0

press RETURN

Please let me know if this fixed it brotha, But try everything first
