Hi,

I got HL2 yesterday, all excited I went and installed it on my PC and after figuring out that the option to install CS:S isn't an option managed to play it after 3 hours :E .

Unfortunatally, I can't get very far. When I go to load the 3rd level (?) the game just crashes to the menu. If I pull down the console I can see the message "Host_Error: Mod_LoadFaces: bad texinfo number".

Looking round on forums I found someone with a similar problem and he/she was told to just warp to the next level from the console. This doesn't work for me. I type "map d1_trainstation_03" and HL2 crashes me back to windows with this error:

HL2Error.jpg

HL2 then gives me a couple of Illigal Ops and I'm then just left sitting there utterly destroyed.

System Spec:
-AMD Athlon 1600+XP
-GeForce FX 5900 with latest Drivers for Win9.x
-384MB SDR at 133
-Muse Game Surround XL
-Win98SE

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix my problems.

Thanks.

Ouch windows 98SE?

Try updating to atleast windows 2000

I ordered Windows XP Professional off Amazon this afternoon, but still HL2 should run on 98.

Yah, it should but I would be willing to guess 98 would probably be part of the problem aswell.

Make sure you do a fresh install of XP and not an update from 98.

From that I'm guessing I shouldn't have gotten the XP Professional Student Upgrade with SP2. Is an upgrade version really that bad?

You usually have a choice to upgrade all your settings and crap from windows 98.

I would just leave it with a fresh install.

Oh goodis, you had me worried, I intended to reformat and install Win98 fresh then patch that to XP anyway. I have a lot of clutter on this PC.

No, just install windows XP and don't bother with 98

For Hl2 I'd seriously consider upgrading your CPU and Ram. GFX card is fine. Not only is your perfomance bottlenecked hl2 like large ammounts of ram. 768mb of ram max, having more on an NT system doesn't do anything.

For example 384mb of pc 133 SD would run hl2 better than 256mb of pc 2700 DDR. I've tried this and experimented a lot.

I'm planning on doing a major upgrade on my PC around may next year. Mobo, CPU and Ram.

But I tried replacing my ram with my dads 512MB or DDR at 333 at it's still a no go.
