So I was playing Half-Life: Episode 2 again the other night and I got thinking whether or not Episode 3 will change some of the gaming cliches we are use to. The idea that I like is to make battles a bit more unpredictable.

For instance, the exploding barrel. You shoot it and it explodes, thats it! But what if the barrel contained different liquids instead; say, oil-based lubricants for servicing machinery. You shoot a few holes in the barrel and the oil spills out, producing a slippery surface for an enemy to lose balance and fall over. Its not incredibly expensive to do this; all you would need is soft particles to visually depict this oil dripping from the barrel onto the floor, and then a decal that increases in size to depict the amount of oil that has fallen onto the floor. Alternatively you shoot a barrel, and liquid falls onto the floor, then you can set that liquid on fire.

Another idea that I have is being able to pick up a vile of chemicals; say Hydrochloric Acid, and then throw it at the enemy. The enemy would scream in pain.

There are some ideas from This Page on Hazardous Materials
Imagine how Pressurised Non-Flammable Gas would react; flying across the room sweeping the enemies clean of the ground. Or alternatively, cryogenic substance?

What are your ideas for ridding the world of gaming cliches, ranging from vents/ducts, boss fights, etc?

I endorse this product and/or event.

If boss fights ever lose relevance I will be incredibly sad.

No, it won't. Enjoy your red barrels.

I've been a bit puzzled that Valve didn't put in gas-canisters that would fly around the environment when you shoot them, seems like such an obvious easy thrill and showcase of the physics...not to mention the hilarity it could cause.

it's one of my favourite parts of an otherwise mediocre game- SIN episodes...those canisters and the jet-pack-soldiers that go flying wild when you shoot them.

They... did. For whatever reason they didn't implement them in the final game though.

I fully endorse oil filled barrels. It is similar to the concept executed in Dark Messiah, by which the player could create a patch of ice on the group and watch as enemies slipped to their doom. That and the kick function made DM worth playing.

Gaming worlds need more air vents that don't go anywhere, or you can't possibly fit through, or that collapse the second you step inside (Episode One did this pretty well)

I think it would be awesome for exploding barrels to sometimes... well, not explode all the time... like, it'd take some random luck to get it to explode.

Wouldn't be able to rely on them 100%, or even close to it, but it would lend so much more satisfaction to a heated gunbattle with gasses spraying everywhere from shot cylinders and leaking fuel containers and then all of a sudden the right mixture is present when the spark goes off and then KABOOM!

General game pet peeves:

-A game that tries too many things/doesn't know what it wants to be
-A game that takes itself too seriously

The modelling would grind any system to a halt.

Not to mention it would be a very frustrating gameplay element at times. For the little payoff of the very rare satisfying moment where things end up working out in an interesting or cool way.

They did, there are a couple in Water Hazard that do that if you shoot them with the airboat gun.

Yes. With today's technology.

Well, it obviously wouldn't be for unrealistic action packed games where explosions are all over the place in an unrealistic manner. Would be cool in some games like Operation Flashpoint style simulators though.

Think about where'd we be without the lowly crate. Think of how many of our hero's would have died just because they couldn't scale that wall. And exploding barrals, those things saved Earth from the demon's many times.

Honestly, if ever we have hostile alien contact, I'd expect to see the world's manufacturing of exploding barrels to increase 100-fold.

I've played thru halflife 2 8 times now and I've never seen them, sure you're not confusing them with something else...like shooting the APC rockets out of the air?

I've only ever seen the gas canisters at the Vortigaunt camp before Nova Prospekt, and in mods. They don't do anything when shot.
Screenshots maybe?
Edit: And Episode Two as well, but they're still inert.

And would be the cause of those manufacturing facilities' destruction
