Creating a neon glow?

I'm creating a HL2: DM map that has massive generators in the main room. However, I'd like a neon glow effect for the "cores" of the reactors. Is this possible, and if so how do I do it?

Thanks in advance...
 
a shader, or a brush entity set to a different render type (additive perhaps?) or use sprites/glow entities
 
Is there a list anywhere of the diff render types? I've always stayed away from that because there are no choices, you just have to know them,
