Creating Maps for BF2

Hi, i got the latest PC Gamer mag (UK Version) and it has a step -by- step guide on how to make a basic map in BF2. I get to point 6 here it says...'Lets add some grass, Select Layers from the resources navigator on the left' Which i do. & pick Layer_1. I cannot find this layer. Does any-1 know where im going wrong, better still does any-1 know where there is a much better newbie level designer guide for BF2?
