Creationism to be banished from Swedish schools

The Swedish government is to crack down on the role religion plays in independent faith schools. The new rules will include a ban on biology teachers teaching creationism or 'intelligent design' alongside evolution.

"Pupils must be protected from all forms of fundamentalism," said Education Minister Jan Bj?rklund to Dagens Nyheter.

Some Christian schools teach biology students that the world and the organisms on it were created by a supreme being. This is often presented as another valid scientific theory alongside evolution - something most scientists reject.

Religious Education will remain on the curriculum and it will still be allowed to start the school day with prayers. But in classes teachers will be expected to stick to the curriculum.

"End-of-term services in school are great," he said, and added that religious education would remain a school subject. But all elements of religious worship would have to be completely separate from class teaching.

Most independent schools in Sweden are privately owned but funded by government grants.

Bj?rklund also said the Swedish National Agency for Education would double the number of inspections of both council-run and independent schools. He also announced a ban on anonymous financial donations to schools and said he would make it easier to close schools that were breaking the rules.

The stricter rules will be introduced in next year's education act.

If you take the official story: Their langauge sounds like singing, anyone who sings each day would be happy, right? No need for bad things when you can sing, sing sing.

a bad atheist is in average FAR, FAR better than an religious person in average. (in other words i'd rather live with a strict atheist than a strict fundamentalist).
 
Amen. The worst thing an atheist is going to do is think you're an idiot if you're religious, but many religious fundamentalists do undesireable things like attempt to suck your blood and make you go to church.

I don't understand what's new, though. All Swedish schools have been forced to follow The Board of Education's curriculum for a very long time, and the curriculum specificially states that evolution and nothing else is to be taught in the schools.

Maybe the news is that they will make it easier to bust privite schools that break the law.
 
If it works for Sweden and the general populace is happy with the change good for them. Creationism is a failed endeaver, you can't take the bible as literally as they do and expect it to actually perform as a replacement for modern science. If they were to actually do research and explain how the various "magical" events in the bible occured naturally(such as the great flood and the plagues on Egypt which have been proven possible by several more open minded scientists) then they could avoid such scorn by the non-religious population. But instead they make no effort to modernize themselves for the current day and age so I really can't feel sorry for them.

If by singing you mean our language sounds like the proud, deep cry of an ancient warrior, heralding the ever-lasting might of a powerful and noble force of military, history and, yes, poetry, lyric and art, then yes, our language does sound like singing.

And yes, Sweden rocks. Most of the time. Sometimes. Well, occasionally. Every now and then. We have our moments. It's a shithole.

Yep. Yet you can always abstain from sex. You're choices and make sure they're the healthy ones. Not the, AIDs spreading, irresponsible "Ooops" Baby happening, cliche' "Oh, it wasn't my fault I'm not ready for a kid roflmao" bullshit.
 
Except people will still have sex. Entrusting the will of abstinence against the deep, biological urge to mate has never been a wise idea. And teenagers have always been most susceptible to poor choices when it comes to sex due to lack of experience, wisdom, and their hormonal activity. To say "You could have abstained" when some couples slip up strikes me as callous and not helpful in the least. It actually just sounds like elitist snobbery out of principle.

Just like there will always be people who do drugs, it is best both practically and morally if we spent more time educating people about safety and prevention. The concern should be over the consequences of sex. Not sex itself. And that's why abstinence is such an ineffective and counterproductive idea.
 
Good move on the parts of the Swedes; nothing like that will ever happen here in the US though, and if it did the fundies would storm out of their Mega-Churches and behead the godless heathens who voted for it.

I've debated with people on evolution and creationism before and I've noticed that the creationist for the most part don't know what evolution even is, see the "we didn't come from no damn munkies" rubbish, and since most of the religious sheep will just gobble up whatever their minister/pastor/father/rabbi/etc says or whatever they read in a little pamphlet from their place of worship, I hear a lot of these idiotic claims like:

"Did you know that the theory of evolution changes every 2 hours?"
-I didn't realize that evolution had a cabal of scientist who updated the wikipedia page on evolution every 2 hours. I guess that whole 'Scientific Method' was just more lies perpetrated by Big Science and Big Knowledge.

"Charles Darwin recanted on his deathbed."
-As far as I have seen this isn't true; and even if it were it doesn't change the theory. So it's still a moot point.

"The Bible does mention dinosaurs as in the behemoth and the leviathan."
-OMG! Bible 1 / Darwin 0. We lose, game over guys.

These are real points I've had used against me - I am not making these up. If I can I'll find the pamphlet that had some of this shit in it. It's good the see the only way the creationist can win is through a massive propaganda campaign aimed at children.
 
It's also common for them to mix evolution with abiogenesis. That really pisses me off.

My point exactly -- except that I think sometimes people can become too focused on wanting to have sex, and eventually, that's all they're relationships will ever amount to. Wanting sex, getting sex, and then leaving.

That causes a lot of backfire on the whole, "healthy sex" thing.
 
If sex education resulted in more carefree humping, I can't say I'd care so long as they're being safe - if not smart - about it. Sex is sex, where you can either make it meaningful or just a fleeting good time.

It's not like abstinence really helps in your scenario of shallow sex. I'd rather that two people get their freak on and risk a breakup than having them commit to something long-term only to end up as two incompatible people stuck in a lasting relationship (ie. marriage). That would be far more damaging IMO.

Yeah, but I still think people should care more about what they do and how it can affect other people. Sure, care free humping would be halfway decent thing, but I see more bad then good coming from people who are nothing but Nymphos.
