Crosshair bugg?? Crosshair appears as a letter Q.

This is strange... I've asked friends and they haven't been able to help me fix this.

In the game (HL2, but not CS:S) my crosshair appers as a letter Q in brackets. For every weapon.

What can I do to fix this? Have you heard of anyone with this before?

Haha, I know. I'm loving this game.

It'd be nice to have a proper crosshair though, y'know. This must be fixable...

I can't believe i'm the only one that has this problem. It's so odd.

Lol yeah it is pretty bizarre, first time i've heard about it. Anyways, sorry I can't help you but I hope you sort it out!

Pretty sure HL2 uses fonts as its hud - you must be missing the font :X

Haha, yeah. I thought it must be something like that. How on earth could I have not downloaded that ONE file though?

Anyway.. maybe we can fix this. I have found a font called "hl2crosshairs" in the "resources" folder.

It turns out that this font is a normal font (ie. abc...). The symbols are missing.

If someone sent me a proper version of this file, would it start working?

Or am I in the wrong folder?

Thats probably it, delete the font and steam should redownload it when you try and play a level.

If not post the directory and Ill send you mine.

Thanks for the advice. The first suggestion didn't work, though.

The folder is:

halflife2/hl2/resource

Maybe this folder is just for fans to be able to use the in-game fonts and such, because even after i deleted hl2crosshairs.ttf from there, the Q still appeared as the crosshair. (But maybe it just reverted to a different default font, coincidently).

Your crosshair font is wrong - thats why, heres mine.

Same problem...

I am having the same problem, here is what I have done to try to fix it so far with no results:

1) Copied both of the TTF files from the resource folder from a machine on my network here at the house that has HL2 running with no problems at all... no help.

2) Renamed the halflife 2 content.gcf file in the root folder "SteamApps" and copied a new file to my folder from the same formentioned machine above... no help.

3) Renamed the TTF files from filename.ttf to filename.old and restarted Steam, no update, started HL2 game, no files copied... no help

4) Got pissed and wrote this and went and ate some dinner.

Still looking into what is causing the problem, will send info asap I figure out what the crap is going on and will post here, or check back here to find solution, I hope.

If it's not just an isolated incident, Steam might issue a fix for it in a patch some day.

Go to "fonts" in control panel (windows) and delete any Half-Life2 fonts there, just did that and now my crosshairs and weapons hub are correct.

If that does'nt fix it for you let me know and I'll continue the search for the answer, but I'm sure that is the problem for everyone.

No problem, I like to troubleshoot problems like this, what makes computers fun. But I guess I get bored easily or something, lol.

So ya'll come visit my site and drop me a message. I plan on having a HL2 server running ASAP to go along with the Source and Q3 servers I run (soon to have DOOM3 as well), will be private (try to keepout the riffraff) but will give password to those that I deam worthy, lol.

yup - i thought it was very weird that not only my crosshair was a "Q", but also the "official" H A L F - L I F E 2 logo on the menu screen was spelled out HALF-LIFE' with a single quotation mark instead of the "2"... also when selecting weapons they showed up as letters, and the smg gun showed up as the lambda symbol - but on another thread on here someone said that if you had installed the half life font before you put the game on, this would happen - so go into your windows/fonts folder and delete the half life font, restart the game and it should work, it did for me!
