The Sierra Nevada Corporation claimed this week that it is ready to begin production on the MEDUSA, a damned scary ray gun that uses the "microwave audio effect" to implant sounds and perhaps even specific messages inside people's heads. Short for Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio, MEDUSA creates the audio effect with short microwave pulses. The pulses create a shockwave inside the skull that's detected by the ears, and basically makes you think you're going balls-to-the-wall batshit insane. The MEDUSA can also "produce recognizable sounds" and is aimed primarily at military uses, but New Scientist revealed there are other uses in the works, too.

And if you're thinking ear plugs are this thing's Kryptonite, think again. Lee Sadovnik of Sierra Nevada Corp. said normal audio safety limits are off the table since the sound bypasses the eardrums and emanates from within the skull. "The repel effect is a combination of loudness and the irritation factor," he said. "You can?t block it out."

James Lin of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Illinois in Chicago says that MEDUSA is feasible in principle.

He has carried out his own work on the technique, and was even approached by the music industry about using microwave audio to enhance sound systems, he told New Scientist.

"But is it going to be possible at the power levels necessary?" he asks. Previous microwave audio tests involved very "quiet" sounds that were hard to hear, a high-power system would mean much more powerful – and potentially hazardous – shockwaves.

"I would worry about what other health effects it is having," says Lin. "You might see neural damage."
As long as this thing doesn't turn you to stone.

As cool and scary as it is I can see one major flaw with it ; couldnt it just make the target more annoyed and possibly insane to the point of not knowing his/her/its actions and basically hulking out (minus the green and super strength and stuff).

Schizophrenia Gun.

I would murder somebody under the effect and say that the voices were so overwhelming and out of my control that I would get off scott free with the military to blame.

perfect for military applications ...why shoot people when you can make them life long mental ward patients by frying their brains?

He told me to burn things.

I love that scene, one of my fave ralph moments

This seems like some sort of awesome device a Super-Villain would invent to gain world control/control over the hero.

I love that scene, one of my fave ralph moments

Ahah, agreed.

It's my favorite Ralph scene too... and every ralph scene is great. He is literally the greatest character on that show.

Agreed, Ralph is awesome.

Also, this ray gun is kinda cool and kinda creepy.

How useful would that military gun be when a remote controlled high tech cruise missile slams into your fancy set up gun destroying everything in a square mile radius down to charred dust?.

At best a crowd control device, courts would see it banned, used in music/advertising industry?, hello, lawsuits people, think.

In conclusion, dead-end. :)

The moment they use it on me, I'd at least injure someone, and then I'd say that the damn voices told me to, and the military would be the one to blame.
At least what I'd do, and I know that most of the rioters would do the same too, so it's a dead end.

where would angry iraqi civilians waiting for their food rations get a cruise missle? or kids from berkley protesting the war or whatever? as much as this is for military contracts it's also for crowd control in general ....people getting rowdy after a hockey game? hey why not fry everyone's brain just to be sure you dont miss anyone

I will pay more tax's for the good of the environment and my......masters.

?wtf?

Yes we must kill master, wicked, tricksy, false. SMITH ARE YOU WATCHING LORD OF THE RINGS! Oh shit I left the microphone one! *Static*

wait....you mean is not normal to be hearing voices in your head?

sometimes i have full conversations in my head. im probabbly going insane.

ps

by giving them more voices? I forsee this

Awesome. Sign me up to put Stephen Hawkings voice in my head. Heeeeelllll yeeeaaaah.

Americans stand up for **** sakes...read the second amendment, it's what gives you the guns you own. :dozey:

Now theres another excuse for murderers to get out of trouble. They can claim temporary insanity, or they can claim temporarily medusa-gunned.

America is Hitler's war machine - extended version

awesome technology.

Wait until they develop low power ones and they start being built into new speaker systems and included on the future's equivalent to the Compact Disc.

Like parts of the song you feel things almost telepathically or someshit? I dig it

I find this incredibly sinister, it's the ultimate subliminal messenger and the worst thing is that if it happened to you, it would be impossible to prove or disprove. You'd pass it off as your own thoughts and convince yourself you believe it. Once people can actually get inside your mind, there's no more barriers, it's total control.

That sounds ****ing awesome. And since it's microwaves, i'm sure it can be used in conjunction to the pain ray. If the voices telling you to cease and desist don't stop you(although I would just use some sort of 'the sounds of hell' cd along with the pain ray) the pain ray will melt your face in an uncomfortable fashion.

In all seriousness, i don't see why people are against the development of nonlethal crowd control.

Thats why.
example:

A riot ensues after a major sporting event. The mob has destroyed public property, smashed in the windows of nearby business and homes, overturned/burned cars, and are looting where they can.

Is it better for police in riot gear to beat people with batons, shoot bean bags, and launch canisters of CS gas, and spray pepperspray into the crowd?

Or would having a loud voice/noise beamed into your head in such a way that it is loud and impossible to ignore, but would leave your body unharmed... a better option? Does the mob have a legal right to destroy property? You're saying it's ok for a violent mob to go unrestrained. Or should the police just politely ask they they stop causing trouble?

Wouldn't it be simpler to just bust out the nukes?

We'll be all like "POW POW POW" , and they will be all "blaaarghuaaah!" and we'll have pan cakes to celebrate and i will be all "om nom nom nawm om"

Is this what riots are coming to? Is it?!

Yes

No

No, that's not what he's saying.

No

If such a device was mass produced, what's stopping these things from getting into the wrong hands? The law? Nah, criminals, terrorists, and corrupt politicians don't abide by the law in the first place, so 'appropriate legislation' won't do much good. The same can be said for guns in general, but this is 'mind control' were talking about. Borderline Frankenstein shit. Far more dangerous than any conventional gun, because if it was ever wrongfully used, it cannot be proved.

Futhermore, our leaders are only human. One day, lawyers and politicians will master the art of 'legal looping' enough to abuse our freedoms in such a way that it cannot be declared 'unconstitutional'. As I've stated, they are only human, and it is likely they will use such a device to 'suppress' our rights, regardless of the constitution. As citizens, it is our right to stand up to the government if we ever think they are abusing their privilege to govern our nation, ergo our Second Amendment right to bear arms, and the sole reason why such an amendment exists.

Long story short, such a device is far too dangerous a weapon under any circumstance. Our species is not mature enough (or never will be for that matter) for a 'mind control' device. I guess the same could be said about nuclear energy weapons too though.

"Mister president, invade! INVADE!"
President: Must... in.. invade.
Evil general: "My plans work!"

so property, all inanimate objects take precedent over people's well beings? are they directly firing their insanity ray at individuals or is less directly targeted, this being audio signals it's pretty obvious which method is in use. So if say 15 people out of 50 are actually destroying property and the other 35 are caught up in the moment but not actually destroying anything they should also have their brains scrambled? anyone who's ever attended any protest can attest to the fact that tactics meant to defuse a riot are used with little to no provocation on an all too frequent basis from the over use of tear gas, to tasers to batons and billyclubs. this weapon like any other will be abused

Riot police like all government bodies are held to certain standards, that being complying with the law, which would outlaw your little head-talking ray so quickly it wouldn't get off the assembly line.

People have the right to protest, THE RIGHT, using this device though infringes on the human rights to not be tortured and generally be treated well.

People have overall accepted that in some situations, using teargas and "old fashioned" methods to disperse a riot, they have not accepted skull vibrating noise rays, hence the authorities cannot use them, and if they did, they would likely be breaching laws/asking for the public to take matters into their own hands through the courts therefor seeing these devices outlawed.
