CHASE Weir hit the brakes of his Ford Explorer hard, but it just kept on barrelling right on down a Melbourne freeway.

The cruise control on the 2002 model was the problem.

It had locked up in motion.

The ignition key wouldn't turn.

The gears were locked.

The brakes were useless.

"Oh my God. Oh My God. I'm going to die," Chase screamed as he put in a triple-zero emergency call.

:O

Before reading anything, I'm going to say that the throttle would stick in my friends old car (very rarely), and he turned off the ignition when it happened.

EDIT:
Why wouldn't the ignition turn? LOL, holy ****.

Only thing I kept thinking is for police car to get in front and hit the brakes to help slow him down, but it might not have been enough, I don't know.

I was thinking this, too, but maybe not with an SUV, no. That's a lot of momentum to cancel out.

Something similar happened when I was just 1. My mom was driving and what happened was the accelerator just jammed at 60MPH. Then what happened was the car sped up to 80MPH +. My mom put a blanket over my head and said it was a game of hide and seek so no glass would cut me if we got in a roll over. My mom tried everything including taking the keys out. Fortunately the ground was muddy and when she drove in the median, the car got stuck in mud. We got out but the thing was still running. Of course I don't remember anything.

Similar event happened to this guy who went to Jiffy Lube only it wasn't speeding up, just slowly rolling it's tires. Weird part was the wheels were spinning at different rates. All sorts of retarded people/things at my first job there.

I wonder if there's a recall on that component of the vehicle.

i bet there's total recall

we dont have them in america

except this happened in australia. way to read the article

they should have chucked wallabys in front of his path to slow him down and then he could have jumped and rolled to safety

As someone already mentioned, how the hell did the ignition jam? Christ...

Why the hell were the gears locked? Why wouldn't you be able to jam the god damn thing in park? Do newer cars prevent you from doing that? Sure, you'd blow the transmission, but it'd stop the car. Or even better, neutral.

I have a manual transmission, so it'd be that much harder for me to have this problem.

lol saw this on the news, in the audio you can hear him screaming and cying lol

Right, if you take it out of gear, cruise control would automatically disengage (though it's supposed to cut out if you hit the brakes as well....)

So what would happen I guess is with the throttle stuck, it would blow the engine if you put it in neutral - if the cruise control was giving enough throttle anyway. But this would be a desirable result in this situation.

I think modern automatic transmission cars have a lock-out, that won't let you put it in reverse, park, things like that. Should be able to go to neutral though.

I was driving my sisters car once, slowing down to park, going about 1 MPH, and put it in park too soon, as it was still rolling a bit, and it made this horrible ****ed up noise. At 80MPH, or whatever, it would probably quickly break the parking gear teeth off or whatever. I'm not sure how they work, but it sounded like metal teeth slipping and stripping.

I think since I was going so slowly, the lock-out didn't work correctly and stop me from putting it in park. Didn't seem to slow the car much.

Still dont understand why you wouldn't just disengage the cluch? Or for you yanks, just put it in first, the car will slow down to 10-20mph...

I almost struck a Mustang on I-95 Sunday. The roads were coated with at least a couple of inches of snow. Didn't do any good to my 1990 Honda Civic.

Perhaps mixing cruise control with a Ford car is the deadliest thing to do. It's just that every time I hear about some kind of car recall, Ford is always the first manufacturer listed.

It's too bad, because I heard the new Ford Sync is pretty cool.

I can imagine it now...The car is stuck on cruise control, and you're speeding like a mad man. Sync says, "What do ya want to do now, master?" And you scream, "JUST STOP THE ****ING CAR!" Problem solved.

lol you yuropeeans are funny. Ford Trucks dont do manual transmissions! that 's for smart cars and ricers and the ******s in yurope/canada not big ole made in AMERICA ford trucks

I want to respond to that. I really do.

That got me thinking as well, its not a very complicated mechanism. At that stage you could say the car was either possessed or someone was intentionally trying to kill him.

Damn, i'm so jealous, i just wish all our cars were 7 litre V8s that developed 50bhp.

Don't your shitty American gearboxes also have gear selection? I mean, the autos i've seen you have P, D, R, 1, 2, 3 etc.

wow thats mad! what did they do in the end? pile up a few pillows, cushions and a massive bouncy castle for him to plow into??

This reminds me of the time I was sitting in the back of my friend's car, as he drove this girl home, and managed to break traction and skid the last turn to her house.

She cooed over it, "WOW, that was cool!" got out, waved bye, I jumped in the front seat, we drove off, and he goes "that was scary as ****"

Me "what was?"

him "That skid *puts car in neutral at stoplight and floors the throttle a couple times. Throttle gets stuck on the floor and doesn't come back up*"

me "HOLY SHIT I thought you did that on purpose..."

He's speeding along the highway at (60mph) dodging traffic and avoiding accidents and manages to phone the Ford motor company and the police and take instructions? ..He's a genius.

Story reminds me of the not-so-lucky driver and three passengers where the accelerator had been stuck. :(

Jesus Christ dude...

That site is just like Rotten or Ogrish.

Maybe you could have put a disclaimer. I was expecting a bit of audio, not a bunch of pics of mutilated bodies and corpses and sex(which isn't the issue) and shit.

You must keep the speed over 60mph or the bomb will explode.

It's unbelievable that family died, despite the viable options of putting the thing in neutral or turning the key.

I've had my accelerator get stuck once, fortunately I wasn't driving fast or on a busy road. Was driving with a few friends from party to party (was sober myself BTW) and we were messing about and I slammed the accelerator to the ground rapidly and then let go, but the car kept on going. I then pressed the clutch to stop accelerating and the engine went really loud and we all were like WTF is going on. I think I slammed on the accelerator again and it unblocked.
