Now we all have access to the Source Filmmaker, we can be pretty confident we'll soon be overtaking Valve in production quality of video shorts. Well the CS:GO trailer kind of threw a spanner in the works on that idea and we can see why with Valve's release of a 'making of' video of the CS:GO trailer.

Employing the use of motion capture for smooth animation of all the models in the trailer was one surprise. The other is to see a full orchestra performing the score for the video, quite an impressive spectacle and something I hope Valve will continue to make use of in future games in order to produce their music. You can check it out below.

So you need all that equipment to make a vid like that in filmmaker?

No. But its possible to use motion capture, as shown in fan films like Practical Problems, which uses it.

No, but it certainly adds to the production value when you have access to studio motion capture equipment, and a live orchestra.

Notice, how none of the actors have facial animation capture markers on them? That's because companies like Pixar, Naughty Dog, and VALVe prefer to animate facial expressions by hand instead of limit them to the reactions of actors who are sometimes just reading from a booth.

In the case of VALVe they combine hand animation with the Source Engine's innovative lip syncing feature.
