CS:S and LAN

Alright, I got the retail version of HL2 with CS:S. Unfortunately my school has a firewall preventing me from playing on STEAM. But I did manage to get my school's network technician to open up the firewall so that I could download the necessary files to play HL2 and CS:S. My question was, do I need STEAM to play CS:S on my school's LAN? Becasue everytime I try to start CS:S, STEAM starts to load and it says that it cannot connect then shuts down. Help!

You should be able to play in offline mode if you have downloaded 100% of the game. Steam should ask you to start up in offline mode if it can't connect to the Internet.
