Valve has announced that they are going to implement a new radar system to counter strike and it made me realize something...

CS started out as a simple mod (or mod-type) game and over the years moved into a complete retail game. While it was a mod, they were making countless updates and fixes and changes (obviously) because thats to be expected from a mod game.

But after they released it retail, they released various bug fixes and updates (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc) because they were required to keep the game playable without cheaters and such.

Now, Steam handles the anti-piracy... so any updates they make to CS would be for shear gameplay and the looks of it.

I think its great to be able to buy a retail game once and expect possibly endless updates to the game... but isn't this sort of a unique concept? I can't think of any other game that has released in box, and then has had updates made to it so much that its like a completely new game years later...

Galactic Civilizations 2. That game has HUGE free updates. It's a very niche game, far from mainstream. Strategy games sell less copies than action games, usually, and GalCiv2 is among the less popular ones. But Stardock, the developer, has this excellent policy of incremental updates.

Doesnt World of Warcract get updated like weekly sometimes and at least monthly?

Well, not only the game costs more than HL2 with CS:S, but you also have to pay monthly for it, so I think you'd expect it to be patched on a regular basis.

Right now they could stop updating CS:S - they're not bound to do so by anything. Yet they keep on updating it to please their consumers.

They've been working on TF2, Episode 2, and Portal for the showing this week. Probably why the update was put off a little. Hell, I rather gets those games sooner than have an update to CS:S tbh :p

\urrrr, no offense but your completely wrong. Your comparing CS to CS:S which if your didn't realise are two completely different games. The updates are generaly just new maps which imo are not that much of an update. Infact I would say that Valve do a poor job of updating there games.

If Valve does a poor job of updating please feel free to explain to us what they could do to make you say they do a good job?

IMHO, HL2 and CSS are the 2 highest quality games I have ever played, fresh from the box they were polished almost to perfection. Constantly being updated rarely to fix bugs but often to give us some more goodies.

I am a frequent reader on these boards but haven't posted in about 2 years, I will be returning to this in hopes you can explain why/how they do a 'Poor' job.

I want some serious updates to the game. Like stuff added (or removed)

I get the feeling that Valve is too afraid to make any changes that would affect the gameplay for fear of angering hardcore fans.

I say screw that, the hardcore fans can go play on servers with the features disabled/enables that were removed from the official game.

I want some new guns... Badly...

Or have an even bigger change, where you can buy accessories for your guns, eg lasers, sights, silencers... Would probably need an increased buy time though.

Meh, I guess I'm more into realism regarding weapons in that respect, but I'd just like to see it.

Theres enough guns, and don't ever expect anymore. It's a CS port and they cannot really do much, theres at most a few more updates then they should start planning a CS2 or something like that. By that time Episode 2(TF2, Portal) should be almost out.

Sod CS:S. I want CS2.

Now that should be interesting and less of the same...

Well, like yourself I was on this board with the HL2 community when it first came out. Honestly, I was very disapointed with HL2. I did not enjoy the game at all and I actually found myself bored about half of the way through the game. Its not a polished game at all, if you want to play a polished game play something like Warcraft 3 and its expansion.

As for updates I would say that been plagued by cheaters and hacks for what is it.... 7 years now... would pritty much explain how badly they have updated it. They didn't release VAC for ****ing ages and when they did it banned normal users.

Valve stated that the Source engine would be constantly updated 'monthly' with engine updates to increase graphics and in the long run keep up with engine standards of today, which imo it has not done. The only thing they have added is HDR and infact a modification called NeoTokyo implimented it into there mod even more Valve.

I could go on and on but hopfully what I have said with justify my decision to say Valve are bad at updating there games. I don't have as much respect for Valve as a lot of fan boys simply because I looked at the games they made and made the choice that they are not all what everyone makes them out to be.

In terms of a good and polished example of a game I will say again a good example is Warcraft 3. They patched the game for competitive players along with your every day players. One race is always generally better in most situations than the other. What Blizzard did was rotate this. Some competitive players changed race most stuck with there favorites. basiclly, imo they didn't need to add any new engine effects or patch many issues they simply made a good game to begin with. They simply changed it slightly for compeitive players and balanced what they had.

then again most gamers would rather gouge their eyes out than get hooked on World of Warcraft....again

You can't use WoW as something to compare CS:S to.

You pay monthly for WoW, which is why it's more polished and has more patches then CS:S.

With CS:S, you pay for the game and that's it. Valve are offering updates to you for free. You have to remember that they are working on other games aswell such as TF2 and EP2.

Err... You guys are aware he was talking about Warcraft 3, not WoW... He never once mentioned WoW.

As for CS2, I didn't think that existed. Has there been even a single word on that at all? I doubt we'll be seeing it.

On the other hand, I don't like the fact that Valve has gotten into the habit of releasing games with the intent of implementing features and fixes after the release date. I think it makes them complacent while they're developing, because they'll go, "Oh, if we don't make the deadline, we'll scrap the multiplayer and package this other side-game to it, with promises of updates in the future." It's nice to get things earlier, but I'd rather play a finished product, even if it means another 3-6 months of development. Does anyone remember what they were planning on doing to DOD:S? They were gonna make it like Half-Life: Source, just a port of the original game with no new models or anything like that. Some advanced water and light changes, that's about it; then they would release the graphical and gameplay updates later. But they got tremendous feedback from people who were waiting on DOD:S to be advanced like CS:S, so Valve had to scrap their whole game plan and do it for real this time.

And another thing, I think Valve should be more conservative with how they announce their projects. If they're not absolutely, positively certain their game will be finished by a certain time, they shouldn't announce it until it's basically in beta testing or something. That way we rabid fans won't get all pissed if they seem to take forever -- because we won't even know about it for too long. Since Valve always seems to take a long time refining the game once it's basically wrapped up, I think it would give them a nice buffer between when they think they'll finish and when they need to promote their game and then release it.

Most likely true. But it's a nice thought.

This is one of the reasons I like valve. Its the same reason why I like blizzard as well - their devotion to quality and ongoing support for the community (did you know that blizzard recently released a new patch for starcraft, that game is like 9 years old).

Oh and its just a fact of life that valve will always cop shit from some members of the counter strike community when a new update comes out regardless of what it does.

Also on the subject of CS2 - whats the point? Isn't CS:S good enough - i.e. what would you change/add?
