Hi,

I recently upgraded my computer with a new mobo, processor and graphics card. Everything works well, except for CSS.

No matter what settings, I am now getting between 10-40 frames per second on several maps, most noticably the new 'cs_militia'. I've tried changing settings, but I receive the same rate with 1024x768 on lowest _Everything_, and on 1280x1024 with most high settings (2x AA).

I read something recently about this issue in CSS, but haven't been able to dig up the fix again.

Note: BF2 and RainbowSix4 demos run at 1024x768 with everything set at full at decent framerates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Specs:

Intel Pentium 4 630 @ 3.0Ghz
ECS P4M800-M7
Legend Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128mb
IBM 60GB HDD
512MB Hynix DDRAM

Are those games running on Source? No, so don't try and compare them to something running on Source, you need more ram and free up some processes on your cpu since Source is very cpu intensive.

I am aware of the differences between Source and other popular games' engines; I was trying to establish that the card was not hideously underclocked or damaged. I have cleared up a few processes (Norton runs thousands...), and reinstalled DirectX and the Graphics card drivers. Militia still runs very badly...

Thanks for the replies :)

I'm really surprised that BF2 runs at decent fps on all high while you have 512 MB RAM. I thought at least 1GB is required to accomplish this.

You cant run, BF2 on full on a 6600GT can you?
Cause I have a 6600GT and a AMD64bit 3000+ and 1gb of ram, what setting cud I run BF2 on with that?

alright do you all honestly believe that buying a stick of ram is going to solve the 18 fps problem? no. Theres something else wrong here because i have many friends that only have 512 ram and they run source just fine with cards much lower than a 6600GT. Ram is not going to boost your fps by 30 or 40, maybe 5-10 at best.

Yeah it can, depends on what kind of video card you have, 512mb ram will bottleneck Xxxx series and 6xxx series and beyond, some. You will notice so more fps if you upgrade to 1gig-2gig.

Ive got a p4 2.4ghz, gffx 5700 ve 256mb and I run game at 35-50 fps. Fine for me! Oh and only 512mb ram

Don't be surprised about that. The lag outside of the house is insane, i get a ton of it.

300w is not enough. The new cards require at least 350W of power. Try upgrading and see what happens.

300 Watt really shouldn't be enough. Maybe with a well known brand. Hell with a crappy brand I'd want at least 400Watt for a 350 watt item.

do you have 1 block of 512 RAM or 2 blocks of 256 each? Because if u only have one you need one more identical.

Upon further examination... Steam was using at least 50% of my CPU ingame. I reinstalled Steam to no avail, and ended up reinstalling Windows (it needed doing... Linux partitions all messed up), and it runs much better.

Thanks for all the help... and I'm now looking for some RAM :)
