will CSS and HL2 Online be playable with 64k dialup i am one of the unfortunates that are too far from the exchange to get DSL and not in a cable area id like to know if i will be able to play? i could play CS no problems but has anyone seen anything about internet connections and CSS?

welcome to the forums.

I'm not sure about your question. I would've thought you'd be able to play (after long dl of cs:s) but you might get kicked for high ping.

I have the same connection as you - the answer is a simple 'HELL YES'
It will run just fine. :)

Gabe posted on the hl2fallout forums about the extra bandwidth CS Source uses, and its so minimal its not even worth mentioning.

No he wouldnt get kicked for high ping, ISDN (im guessing its ISDN u have or is it cable) generealy is between 35 and 110 ping depending on server location.

This from HL2Fallout >>

GoldSrc : 2.72 kB/sec << CS
Source : 2.85 kB/sec << CS Source

Bytes in Bytes out Average kB/sec
Source no physics : 1,184,831 430,957 1.93

So source has better network code than the old CS if you look at it with no physics.
Enable them though - which they will be and you have such a small difference you wont notice it.

64k can hit 7 to 8.5 kB/sec - just as a comparison.

well that's good news for everyone :) :p :)

hell yes .. latency isnt the problem its bandwith corect: i am on ISDN2e 64k dialup and a decent ISP but some games recently want big bandwith (CoD and BFseries mainly) i have never had a problem with CS as far as conection was concerned, but wondered if they would get sloppy with the netcode and let peoples broadband mask it. thank god its not the case :) since i bought a 6800Ultra for yummy games like this :)

Yup miro, bandwidth heavy games are a killer for anyone with 64k or less. :(

I am really looking forward to Team Fortress 2, to see how Valve handle vehicles with their engine, + bandwidth. I cannot think of any games that match the smoothness of CS gun fights, as much as I love Battlefield 1942 vehicles, the infantry side sucks in my opinion.

I have a feeling we may just see some vehicles in the HL2 multiplayer (yup I too believe its not CS Source) Fingers crossed.

Battlefield 1942, my 56k cant play that game online, and according to me it has a very sloppy netcode.(Ive heard highspeed people complain)
