Ok, I have about 512mb RAM on my emachines computer. and i have a POS 64mb video card. My dad who doesn't know anything about computers or video games went out and bought a 512mb Geforce (i think?) video card.. should i be able to finnally play my hl2 with out lagging? and what about css? would i be able to play that?

*Moved to hardware - should get more help here.

Could you find out the exact name of the card your father has bought?

Also it's important to understand things aren't as cut and dry as you mention. Different graphics cards have different sets of teeth on them that fit into certain slots inside your computer. You hopefully are looking to have a free AGP or PCI-Express slot inside your computer, so that your card fits. You should be able to pick up a card for a good price nowadays that plays HL" & CSS on medium settings nicely. 512mb of RAM will be fine (ish), do you know your processor speed also?

What model is the video card?

Without any more information (processor, motherboard, RAM speed, etc), I'm guessing it'll be better, but you'll still be held back by only having 512 MB ram (you should have at least 1GB), and probably your processor, especially if you've got a Celeron or Duron (intel and amd "economy" chips)

Honestly it was probably a huge waste of money. Your RAM (and probably your CPU as well) will bottleneck the card all to hell. If possible, go return it and buy a Geforce 7900-model or 6800-model card, those are the best midrange cards.

[edit] Assuming it's not a 512mb version of either one. Either way I'm just assuming it's a high-end card, most 512mb cards are.

ok wait maybe i was wrong the card is a

Your pc could really use some more ram, but other than that it's a good machine that will run hl2 and css perfectly fine.

YES! haha thats what i wanted to hear! lol ive been dying to try css and be able to play my hl2 smoothly! thanks alot!

I myself have the 7900 GS and I play all settings maxed out (minus HDR, it owns my face) at about 90 FPS. As for RAM I have 2gig and sometimes get a very small amount of lag. Upgrade your RAM and you should be good to go.

Mmmm for my X2 4200+, x1800XT, 2 gig of ram...

...
This isn't a "Post your PC" thread? Damnit...
*Walks out of thread with head hanging low..*

lol why the hell are you all posting highend cards that his pc will not even run. chances are he bought a 512mb cheap card.

oh yea, well... Mmmm to my setup too... Is it a possibility that we can get a thing going on here? Sweet....

Oh and that card should get you rolling just fine. That is assuming you have the corresponding slot in your computer. Cross your fingers if you don't know.:p
