CSS latency

ok I always assuemd that i could not play multiplayer games over the net because i only have a 56k at home.

But i tried CSS last night and found a server with A latency rating of 272 or around that. The gameplay seemed OK, other people dident seem to be boosting faster than me or anything.

I need to know what is acceptable and what is considered sweet?

Whants the lowest latency rating that you would want to play on a server?

And how can i tell if i'm playing on a Beta server or are there none?

I don't think there're any Beta servers around these days.

I'm a 56ker also, yet I've found that CS:S actually has better netcode than the original. I usually consider anything below 300 to be more than playable ping-wise On my oldest machine I used to have a 350 ping minimum, which I learnt to play with, but these days on CS:S I tend to stick between 190-290. Sometimes, for no good reason, I encounter massive random lagspikes but that's always been a problem with Steam for me, particularily during the opening moments when I've just connected to a game.

Bottom line- anything you can play with without feeling exceedingly laggy and/or filled with murderous rage is fine.

Ideally you want sub 70 ping, especially in CS:S coz the netcode sux. I'm using broadband and after when playing in a 120-140 ping server, i encountered massive stuttering/lag. Grenades were constantly having their trajectory recalculated and players were moving forwards and back.

I've been playing tonight the best i get is about 23* but it seems ok - yes i'm crap but the game speed seems ok. My position has frosen once (when crouching near a friend). and if i run into a friend there seems to be skipping/lag. I dont know shit but the code seems quite good to me but, will it get better? (have there been any steam patches at this time and do we expect heaps more?)

There've been a few optimisation patches already and it's safe to say that there'll be more. Don't expect a perfect experience if you're stuck on dialup though...

For me, I get no better ping on Cs or CS:S
I myself are a 56k.
I play Cs:S on a regular basis, just like I played Cs and Ns on a regular basis.

LOL, the netcode is awesome dude. Im always on an average of 220 ping, and I never ever see anything of that sort. The game is smooth as if I played it singleplayer, yes that is how smooth it is for me on my damn 56k.

So, if anyone ever tells you "It's to big to dl on a 56k, ohh Cs:S netcode is to bad, it will just lag online". You prove them wrong. A 56k is not limited on what they dl or how big. Cs:S netcode is infact better than the oringal(prove in a test), with physics its a mere bytes more than the oringal, and bytes makes no diffrence even on a 56k standard.

The netcode is A++, If I can see everything as smoothly on a 56k as If I were to play singleplayer. Well I can, A++ netcode.

When I play CS:S, and it's not smooth well I know something is wrong. Thats usually having something extra up, people IMin me, etc.. But I can exit out all of those, reconnect, and be back playing for a few hours.

i'm with Minerel
i just had a 4 hr sesson on 56k, i'm new and it was still v close to being ofline

UNITE MY LAGGY BROTHERS! CRUSH THE BROADBAND INFIDELS!

...oh, crap. Well, they outnumber us 10,000 to one, but I'm good.

Seriously though, the idea that 56kers can't play online is a myth. I have a fairly powerful computer, and thus I can often play games- especially RTSs- online with less lag than a gamer with five times my connection but half my computing power.

'Course, we often have to make sacrifices- downloading full games, for example, can be pretty damn painful, especially on a limited connection...

I noticed CS:S is VERY dependant on ping, if i get over 100 ping it makes a lot stuttering and roll backs.
I would choose a server by ping more than by map.
It just is so important to have good ping if you are going to frag some

Sad but true :(

My ping is usually around 150 - 250, but get the occasional big spike that gradually comes back down after a moment or two, which i got with the previous CS. If i have a ping of 260+ then it's not worth playing, but anything below that and i'm fine, and am capable of getting some good killing sprees going, though it depends more on out thinking opponents rather than out shooting them as shots can sometimes take that little bit longer to register.

I've always praised the CS netcode as it's one of the only FPS i can play online and not be at too much of a disadvantage, though it's always a shame it is ruined sometimes by narrow minded people who somehow get it into their head's that broadband is available everywhere, but let's not get too far into that.

I'm sweet too.

the only problem i've had is sometimes i see myself duck behind something while in a firefight but then i'm dead where i was before i ducked behind the object (bug or lagg)

i see myself behind box then i'm dead out in the hall

I always go on servers with less than 50. That ensures me I will play without any lag whatsoever.
