cubemap problem

OK, so I tried the search function and found nothing to explain this error I get in the console when I go to build my cubemap:

Material "debug/debuglightmap":
No render states in shader "LightmappedGeneric_DX8"
Material "debug/debuglightmapzbuffer":
No render states in shader "LightmappedGeneric_DX8"

No cubemap appears. The pool in question is simple and rectangular. IIRC I'm using one of the Canal water shaders. Thing is, it appears to be doing the rendering when I enter the 'buildcubemap' console command, then on restart there's nothing but transparent water and this error message.
