I dunno why, but Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger 7.0 seem to be co-existing on my system, butting each other out every three minutes. 7.0 is my favoured program, but Windows Messenger is auto-logging in every couple of minutes - can you tell me how to stop it? It dosn't show up in my system tray, though, for some reason, or in the programs list in my start menu.

I had the same problem.. if you can open Windows Messenger, in the options you can have it so it doesn't start at start-up.. I think. I know there's something in the options which stops it. I daren't open it to check :P

You can uninstall Windows Messenger by going to Add/Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components :D

Yep took me a while to find that option when I installed XP not that long ago!

Remember it still leaves a ghost in the registry. Also, you can disable it running on startup in msconfig.

There's an option somewhere in Outlook Express that says something like "automatically log into Windows Messenger when Outlook runs" and it's checked by default. Could it be happening when you check your email?

I don't get it, why does MS keep two different IM clients on your system?

I have to download Msn Messenger, while windows messenger came with windows.
Thus they only keep one.

You see Windows Messenger I believe is more for business practices while MSN is more for... us....

doesnt work, at least on mine. just keeps on coming back on.

you also might have to delete a folder in your program files called (I think) "messenger"

there'll be 2-3 folders, you just need to delete one.

msmsgs is a whore i agree,

do a search on your computer for msmsgs or what ever it ss called and then just change all the files that come up (rename them) and put _x or something at the end tha way it cant find the program to boot!

easiest way i found to deal with it cos it is annoying

Put this in the run cmd line without the "

"RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

it will remove messenger off your computer permanantly

Right, i used the add/remove windows features. We'll see if it works...

/EDIT jeebus even with Windows Messenger un-installed it STILL auto-logs out of MSN Messenger. Jeebus. Just... jeebus.

Do you get teh message "MSN Messenger has logged you out as another account with the same username has signed in on another computer" or something to that effect?

Yep. Cursed thing.

It dosn't tell me when it logs on, it dosn't even tell me it's there, until I'm happily chatting away with a friend, then POOF, 'you cannot send a message because you are not logged in', and a little window appears over my system tray saying 'You have been logged out because your account has been logged into from another computer'.

Does it always happen after teh same amount of time online or is it random, because if its random, it could that you have saved your pass on another pc and when they start it, it signs you in and kicks you off. If its after teh same amount of time, then check again that you have properly removed the other version of windows messenger.
